My first steps in Skyrim with PlayStation VR - Little news under sunshine

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has of course been known for several years. Since 2011, it is known to everyone that you can run through the Skyrim landscape like a hero and dragons can annoy with some shouting. And if you want to steal, then it's enough to put a bucket on someone's head, making him look nothing. Nowadays, not so spectacular more than then, because we are a year or six further and meanwhile virtual reality is there. I have been able to play this six year old game, but then with PlayStation VR.

Shoot with the bow and swing with a sword

Once i got the VR headset and two Move controllers were pushed into my hands, i could get started in Skyrim. I dropped right in the first temple of the game and that was a great start to test it all for a while. Strange enough, i did not get the chance to see one of the open fields or forest areas of the game, a missed opportunity. After all, beautiful views want to demonstrate, because that's what you really want to see, right? But well, so i was in the temple, and i was equally familiar with the gameplay.

Here i had the choice of a sword and shield, magic or arrow and bow. After first having swept around with the sword, i finally chose the arrow and bow. That was simply the most fascinating, because the Move controllers are the best to borrow. The moves you make when drawing an arrow are also to do with the Move controllers, and that works just fine in VR. For those interested: fighting with a sword is not too special, because by swinging and chopping you will come. Magic works a little differently, because it is enough to aim and hold the trigger to ultimately fend toward the goal.

Little news under sunshine

For the rest, i will not go too far into what i have experienced, because the gameplay is little news under the sun. Yes, the control is different and you are now experiencing virtual reality and that is actually the case. Graphically, the game is absolutely not special and so i am not impressed or disappointed. The graphics have been upgraded in 2011 and then in virtual reality. This compares with other VR titles fine, but that is all said. That brings me back to a previous point: Skyrim is just not that much more in 2017, even if you're playing virtual reality.

A pretty big criticism is indeed the way i had to play the demo. Instead of freely moving around, it was only possible to advance through a teleporteersysteem. This is to prevent motion sickness. Someone did indeed tell that once the game suits me, the option to freely move around there will be in, but leave out a demo is not really useful. So i have no idea whether the smooth play at all works.

Teleporting is a well-known system in virtual reality games, but it feels a bit cheap in this game. Indeed, it made the demo anything but interesting to play. The whole immersion was broken and let's just be a reason why you would like to play this game in virtual reality. Although the rest worked fine, it still feels a little uncomfortable and unnecessary. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that for the second time i see a performance of Skyrim that does not really matter in the gameplay, except for an alternative control.

Extra fun?

However, the biggest fans will certainly be interested, because if the smooth way of moving works well, the game in VR will provide the right immersion. The downside is, of course, that it's a game where everyone has at least 500+ hours or maybe more. Do you have PlayStation VR home and you find this game interesting? Then it may be a nice trial, but i doubt if you will have another 100 hours left. Also, it is still clear whether it works as a whole at all, because the demo did not give a full picture of it.

Thanks for your precious time.
