STEEM Geek Podcast Episode#5 - 5 Moments in Gaming that Broke Our Hearts!

in #gaming6 years ago

Many of us gamers play games to relax, unwind after a hard day's work, and just to have fun. But sometimes we come across games that get you heavily invested in the characters and the story. So invested that the slightest hint of tragedy striking gets us all squirmy and filled with anxiety. And when that moment finally hits us, it leave us in a pool of our own tears.

Here are the list of games that have broken our hearts and made us cry throughout the years!

Number 1

Final Fantasy VII - Aeris' Death (Bran's Pick)

Source
Whether you're team hot bartender or team flower girl, the death of Aeris at the hands of Sephiroth was a sad moment in gaming. Having spent a good 15-20 hours with the whole crew, a young and naive me was expecting a happy Disney ending where everyone makes it through to the end alive.

Final Fantasy X - Ending (Bee Yen's Pick)

Source
Star player of the Zanarkand Abes, Tidus finds himself stranded 2000 years into the future. With the help of Wakka, and Lulu he meets Yuna and Kimahri who are all on a quest called The Pilgrimage where a Summoner and his or her Guardian travel all over Spira to receive the blessings from the Fayth. Only then you find out that it's not the future and Tidus is a Dream of the Fayth and the only way to end the whole ritual facade is to be rid of the Fayth thus ending Tidus' existence.

Number 2

Mass Effect 3 - Mordin Solus' Redemption (Bran's Pick)

Source
Mordin Solus' sacrifice to cure the genophage has got to be one of the most honourable moments in gaming. Sadly it also meant the end of one of the games' best characters as he bravely stays behind to see things through to the end, leaving gamers feeling all sorts of sad knowing that our favourite alien Scientist will never be heard singing again.

The Last of Us - Sarah's Death (Bee Yen's Pick)

Source
There are many scenes but I picked the first scene, the strongest pull to the game. Joel and Sarah escapes on foot and stumbles upon a military barricade who saves them from the zombies chasing them. Just when you think they're safe, you over hear the military's conversation on his orders and they don't sound good. Joel turns to run but he and Sarah gets shot by the military, Sarah's vitals were injured and dies in his arms.

Number 3

Dragon Age II - Hawke's Mum (Bran's Pick)

Source
Losing a loved one is never easy. Imagine losing your mother to a psycho mage who murders her and turns her into a zombie made of different body parts belonging to different women. After all the trouble and hardship they went through just to make it to Kirkwall and settle down. It was definitely an unexpected end for a character that you never would expect the worst to happen to.

God of War: Chains of Olympus - Calliope (Bee Yen's Pick)

Source
A spin off title on the handheld console, at the end Kratos gets sent to Elysium where he meets his daughter, Calliope. Thinking that this is it for him and he could finally rest in peace, Persephone(the villain) explains to him that she has released Atlas and he is going to destroy the pillar that holds the world, killing everything and everyone(including Calliope) in it. Knowing that the only way he could save her is to leave her and become the Ghost of Sparta once again.

Number 4

The Last of Us - You're Not My Daughter (Bran's Pick)

Source
What can we say about The Last of Us? We love everything about the game. And part of what makes it a perfect game is due to the solid performances of the actors. And this scene is just a perfect example of that as Ellie tries to get Joel to stick around take her to the Fireflies, but Joel can't seem to bring himself to risk reliving the loss of his daughter. One of gaming's best scenes. Period.

Parasite Eve: Sheeva (Bee Yen's Pick)

Source
Ben, Daniel's son just can't catch a break. After witnessing his mother brutally dying in front of him, he befriends a dog named Sheeva and was told by her handler that she will always protect him. All hell breaks loose and Ben chases after Sheeva who started to feel ill and attacked her handler. Aya searches for Ben and finds him with the Chief. Sheeva turns into a monster, and Ben begs Aya to not let her turn into a monster which could only mean ending her misery.

Number 5

Metal Gear Solid 3 - The Boss' Sacrifice (Bran's Pick)

Source
Superb cinematic storytelling and a plot worthy of a Hollywood conspiracy movie, MGS3 sits at the top of this list. After spending most of the game hunting down The Boss and defeating her in one on one combat, Eve reveals the truth behind the Boss' defection and why she was actually a true patriot.

The Last Guardian: Ending (Bee Yen's Pick)

Source
After all you've been through in the game with Trico, nothing can stand in between you and your Trico. Not even being attacked by multiple other Trico Guardians will stop your character from defying the odds. After saving Trico and losing consciousness, Trico carries you back to your village knowing that that is the only way to save you from your injuries. Upon reaching your village, the villagers who only recognize Tricos as the children kidnapper/ child eater pry your character away from Trico and threatens to stab him with a spear if it got closer. Trico who is only loyal and concerned for the boy would not leave. Knowing that Trico could not stay here with you, the only way to save him is to send him away. When this happens, the game doesn't just show him leaving, you as the boy would need to press the buttons on your controller, giving him the command to "fly up". Hearing this broke Trico's heart, his face in disbelief as he flies off into the sky. Fast forward into the future, the boy, now an old man, telling his grandchildren about Trico. The last scene hints at Trico and Trico Guardian are still alive all this time.

Honourable Mentions

The Last of Us| Left behind - Don't Go

It's hard enough to survive let alone find true love in a zombie apocalypse world.

Uncharted 4 - Sam's "Death"

Source
That moment when you realize that you're probably not leaving prison with your brother.

Uncharted 3 - Sully's "Death"

It's like watching your favourite fun uncle die in your arms. It's a good thing I don't have one!

Suikoden 2 - Nanami's Sacrifice

Another noble moment for a character that ends up in bloodshed.

You're right, some games were really unique and they always made us have fun! Really interesting post, thanks

Woah, welcome to @dtube my friend!!! Never realized that you have a video format of this podcast series, loving it!!

Yo @aaronmcheong! @siren87 and I just started using DTube with this episode :) Dsound still not working for us Hahaha!

Can you describe what issues are you facing in @dsound? I might be able to help :)

It just crashes instantly after i hit the publish button. Something about a network server error i think

Could it be your bandwidth? Recently a lot of #teammalaysia users have that issue.. If it's network server error, it's usually between you and the server itself. One way is to just wait and re-try after a couple of hours (that's what I use to do when I had this issue with Steemit)

Dunno, man. I've tried different times of the day and it still hasn't worked out for me.oh well. Keep trying la :)

You should try to contact the Dsound guys through its discord server - their staff is really active and helpful there

Great post!
A moment in games I will never forget is a certain decision you take in Spec Ops: The Line that seems harmless at first but has big consequences on the life of dozens.

I don't want to spoil it too much - the game is cheap now and it is really worth a playthrough.

Hey,man!

Thanks for checking out our show!

Great comment!

Have not played spec ops but boy, that sounds heavy! Gonna go check that out soon on YouTube.

Thanks again! Following!

I've not played Spec Ops but I know which scene you're talking about. A lot of people talk about it. That scene is a real shocker. Thanks for checking out our post :)

The only game that ever made me cry is an indie game called This War Of Mine. At one point I was so desperate for food to keep myself and my housemate alive, it was only two of us left. I went scavenging for 3 nights and still couldnt find enough food. My housemate fell ill and I don't have medicine and any raw material to make one. I went scavenging the fourth night and couldnt find meds and enough food, I watch my housemate died. in fact all other two of my housemate died earlier. My last resort to survive is to go to one house that I know have a lot of resources but I never touch that house because an elderly couple lived there. That night I went there, I promised myself not to hurt them, I just want to take some foods and meds. Just when I enter the house the old man saw me he tried to hit me but I shot him, dead, the wife came out, I shot her too, dead... i just stood there dont know what to do... I take their food, eat it, close the game and never play it anymore after that.

Oh my god that sounds absolutely horrible. And that's not a scene planned and created but circumstances made that scene in the game. Thanks for checking out our post and for sharing your gaming moment! Really appreciate it :)

Not sure if it's really planned out that way but many were broken hearted by that part of that game. I think after that they changed it a bit before the released the mobile version.

You're welcome! Keep it up you two :)

Dude. What kind of game is that? It's terrifying and depressing at the same time!

Thanks for commenting and checking our post! Appreciate it!

It was a post-war kind of game but instead of playing as a soldier you play as a war survivors. You will be staying at one house with some other playable characters will join as you go on. You need to go scavenging every night to look for resources to make the livelihood in that house better. You need to craft, build and make things for that reason. The game has no ending, it just a matter how long can you survive it and it's getting harder each day it passed.

It does very depressing in a lot of ways hahaha

Anyway, you're welcome. Keep up the good work :)

The final goodbye scene in The walking dead: telltale game season 1. Really felt attached to the characters it was heartbreaking. The later seasons of the game could never recapture the magic.

Oh, i think i saw @siren87 play that part. I never got into the game but I kind of knew the characters enough and yeah it looked like quite a sad one
