LA Noire Remastered - Still impressive
LA Noire is and remains a unique title. The game appeared in 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and for that time the title was very progressive. Of course, the facial animations were much praised because Team Bondi had used a unique technology to represent it as realistically as possible. The game itself was excellent, with an atmospheric rendition of Los Angeles, a fascinating story, nice things to solve and so on. Now in 2017 the game will be available again, but in a remaster jacket.
The career of Cole Phelps
The LA Noire remaster offers exactly the same content compared to the original. That means you will once again go through the career of Cole Phelps in his adventure. After World War II he joined the Los Angeles Police Department, where he spent his first months as a street agent. Because of his bold action and urge for justice, he is soon promoted to the position of detective and gradually you are dealing with more and more complex and large issues at different departments.
That has remained identical in this remaster, but Rockstar has added all downloadable content that appeared to the game afterwards. This gives you the complete package of LA Noire content and that is good for dozens of hours of fun. As you get further into the game, you get to deal with larger issues that sometimes turn out to be very complicated, but because of the decent gameplay, the whole still stands today as a house. The way of researching, conducting dialogues, driving around and walking in the city, the action... it feels familiar and good. The basis has therefore been kept as close as possible to the original, which was already excellent at the time.
Still impressive
Obviously, the PlayStation 4 edition of LA Noire is more than just a bundle of all content. For the current generation of consoles, some upgrades have been implemented. The standard upgrade is of course visible on the visual plane, so you can now play the game in 1080p on the regular PlayStation 4 and in 4K on the PlayStation 4 Pro. In addition, Rockstar has provided many textures with a new coat of paint and the result is that the game looks pretty tight. Of course it does not come close to Grand Theft Auto V, but it is nonetheless visually a very nice game.
Now the game was already on the PlayStation 3, so by definition you have an advantage if you hit a remaster. Apart from the fact that it looks very sleek for a remaster, we must not forget to also look at the animations. LA Noire distinguished itself from other games by using a technology with which faces could be superrealized in the game. In fact, facial expressions can be crucial in a questioning. Now that we have been going on for more than six years, the development of animations is very advanced in contemporary games.
Yet i can not deny that the facial expressions are still of top notch quality. Everything that people do, express and experience, can be read in their faces. After six years it is still an impressive piece of technology that was used at the time and with the upgrade in visual qualities it is even better than before. People behave in a realistic way, the lip sync is in order and once again the good looking at body language comes forward. That is and remains special, because once again, the game is more than six years old.
However, we should note that some animations - apart from facial expressions - some unnatural or wooden eyes. But luckily that is minimal and will not bother you. The occasional frame drop and some pop-up that the PlayStation 3 version has also been minimized and hardly ever occurs. In that respect, it is visually clear: Rockstar has managed to improve the game on all possible fronts, making it stand its ground between all remasters and even any recent releases that have been put together with less resources and budget. For a game of six years old, to my knowledge this is the best compliment you can get.
Other adjustments
As already indicated, this remaster offers the basic game and all downloadable content that has been published afterwards. In terms of gameplay it is identical and although it was not necessary, they have added some extras. Cole automatically exchanged a suit for each promotion in the original and you can now expect those suits as well. The only difference now is that these suits all bring their own advantage in the game. So you have a suit with which you can hit harder and more hits with it, another suit lets you shoot more accurately with a machine gun or shotgun and this way every suit offers an advantage.
Furthermore, two extra Trophies have been added, which are aimed at even more collectables. For the rest, all Trophies are taken one on one from the original. Finally, we have a small gameplay change that, according to Rockstar, is more in line with Cole's behavior. In the PlayStation 3 version you could label an answer as 'truth' or 'lie' in a questioning. The golden mean was 'doubt', after which you could possibly ask a bit further or present evidence. That way of conducting dialogues and finally acquitting or accusing someone is unchanged, but this time the options are 'Good cop', 'Bad cop' and 'Accuse'. It is indeed a bit better in the way that Cole reacts, so it's a great adjustment.
Worth the effort?
LA Noire is back and better than ever in this version. The game was always good and the improvements that have been made in this reissue are all good. It looks very good in 2017 and is one of the finest remasters available. The other minor adjustments and additions in the gameplay are not too special, but a nice extra. If you played the game in 2011 and you feel like the adventure of Cole, which is now offered as a complete package in one go, the purchase will not disappoint you. Did you completely miss the game at the time, then LA Noire is still worth it today. The game may be a bit more expensive than the average remaster, but the playing time and quality make it more than good.

It is one of my favourite games!
Honestly while it was a decent game originally i did find the game to be quite repetitive. I really don't see myself buying the game again but glad others are enjoying it.
