Hearthstone: Kobolds and Catacombs - Hearthstone fans descend into mysterious catacombs looking for legendary 'loot'

One of the most anticipated announcements on BlizzCon 2017 was the unveiling of the new Hearthstone expansion, after exploring the Un'Goro crater and fighting The Lich King's Death Knights, that the new expansion for some classic 'dungeon crawl' action in Kobolds and Catabombs.

The new set again contains 135 new collection cards, including some fairly exciting new ideas: the largest of these are the legendary weapons, one for every 'class'. As in the previous expansions this year, this makes the collection of all 'legendaries' more pricey. However, it also adds some flashy action and more impact to the gameplay. A good example is the Aluneth, the legendary Mage weapon, which gives the player three extra cards each turn. It is a 0/3 weapon so you can not get away from it, pulling too many cards and killing yourself a serious problem if you do not beat the opponent quickly.

The crazy effects of many of the new cards are not meant to upset the entire 'meta', but to create unforgettable situations and giving players the chance to make as many new 'deck types' as possible.

The new keyword in the expansion is Recruit, which is actually an abbreviation for "summon a minion on the board". New maps that contain this are not very spectacular, but can open up some interesting possibilities, avoiding disadvantageous 'battle cries' and allowing large minions to appear early on the board, similar to the so-called Big Priest and Big Druid decks. However, we became more enthusiastic about the new Spellstone maps, something that we have not seen before in Hearthstone. These can be upgraded in your hand by performing certain things, such as collecting 'armor' with Warrior or 'overload' with Shaman.

Just like Knights of the Frozen Thrones, a considerable piece of single-player content is added. According to Chayes, they wanted something completely new and this resulted in a PvE game mode called Dungeon Run. Rather than just completing "wings" in a linear order, Dungeon Run saddles players with eight bosses to be eliminated; one after the other; with one deck. This deck only starts with 12 cards and every victory rewards you immediately with powerful loot (not the same as all the collectors cards) and three new cards. Final boss battles can become increasingly difficult and it is a big challenge to choose the cards that will help you the most. The developer also promises 48 different encounters, so that every 'run' must feel fresh.

We could try a demo of Dungeon Run on BlizzCon and that was entertaining. We had the choice of three classes (Mage, Warrior and Priest) and each run was unique, even though the demo had only a handful of enemies. It was also pretty challenging and achieving a successful victory with every class is a big job. This rewards the players with a special 'cardback', but Chayes and Shimizu did not yet want to reveal what the other rewards, in the form of cards and packages, are that offers the mode.

The developers let us know that at least two legendary cards will be available for all players. When the expansion appears in December everyone gets a random legendary badge. The best thing is that these can be used from then on, which is a great way to introduce the expansion and we hope that Blizzard will release more loose cards in the future. Marin also seems to be a very entertaining card; it calls up a treasure chest, but on the opponent's side. To know what's in it you have to destroy it. The "fantastic treasure chests" are completely disturbed, so we are not surprised if Marin is in every 'control deck'.

All in all, Kobolds and Catacombs seems a solid expansion. The feeling of D & D adventure and well-known WoW dungeon looting is emphatically present, so fans of the universe will certainly be satisfied with the theme. That said: we are still not completely convinced and want to see more, but the epic set-up of Knights of the Frozen Throne seems hard to match. However, the expansion contains some very cool concepts and we look forward to playing the Dungeon Run content and trying out the legendary weapons and 'spelltones'. Let the queesten start!
