The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch) Review - One of the best RPGs, now in full glory on the handheld.

There are now eight versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . The three original versions for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the Legendary Edition for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the virtual reality version for PSVR and now the Nintendo Switch version. Bethesda has been able to benefit enormously from this fantastic RPG, even though the company sometimes shows some stingy features. A game of this caliber on the Nintendo Switch is certainly attractive, especially since it is the first time that it appears on a Nintendo console. However, 59.99 euros ask for a six year old game, without real new content, seems too much of a good thing. But still: if you have never played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, this is the time to experience one of the most fantastic game adventures ever.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrimis an unadulterated RPG, in which you really participate in a sham as a character in a role play. There is more behind a rpg than 'skill trees' and Bethesda understands that better than most. You make a character from nothing, without a past, and from here you build the adventure that you want. You can participate in the civil war between the Imperials and the Stormcloacks; take on the role of a murderer for the Dark Brotherhood; house robberies and robberies in the Thief's Guild; or try your luck in the Mage's Guild. You can even become a werewolf or a vampire, if you wish. The possibilities are huge and worst a handful of contemporary games offer this freedom of choice in what the player can become. This does cause some incoherent moments in the game.

As far as gameplay is concerned: you can choose a more 'stealthy' approach with one bow; fighting with a shield and sword; to handle a gigantic ax; or fireballs from your hands. You can even call the dead or convince the living that you are a friend. You can do all that and much more. The choice is, again, yours.

However, if you are already familiar with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrimit might be more interesting to know how it plays on the Switch and what it looks like. As you can probably guess, this does not work with the latest versions on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. There are lesser details on the screen, especially outdoors, where the number of flowers, the 'textures' of the ground and other similar details are considerably less. The game is also less sharp. We do not know the exact resolution of Skyrim on the Switch, but if we compare the PS4 version and the Switch version on a large TV, then the difference is clear. The Switch version is less sharp, which causes a faded image effect. This effect is less severe in handheld mode, probably because of the smaller screen. In this mode Skyrim on the Switch does not look as bad as on the TV, similar to Doom on the Switch.

Fortunately, the game felt very stable and smooth, with 30 frames per second. I have not finished playing the full game yet, but in the tens of hours that i have put into it i never encountered any gigantic delays that could be a hindrance to the gameplay. I could also appreciate the fast loading times.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim itself is a gigantic game, in which you can easily lose more than 100 hours and this version also contains the three official expansions: Hearthfire, Dawnguard and Dragonborn. The first introduces building houses, where the player can live with his family if he chooses. Dawnguard is a story about vampires and supernatural magic, where Dragonborn takes the player to a new world map and involves the mystique behind dragons and their bond with the player. In other words: Skyrim is possibly the longest game on the Nintendo Switch, bigger than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . However, the version does not have access to mods, unlike the Legendary Edition.

The Nintendo Switch version also has some peculiarities, such as the movement control with the Joy-Cons. Personally i am not fan of this control, but if you do this you can aim with your bow, use magic and even attack and block with the controllers. On the other hand, i recommend the use of the Pro controller. Traditional playing with the Joy-Cons is possible, but the sensitivity of the analog sticks is not the best for this type of game.

Another function of this version is amiibo support. When you have seen the trailer, The Legend of Zelda is represented by the sword of Link, his shield and armor. You can find these objects in the game itself, even without amiibo, or use the Zelda figures to increase your chances through special treasure chests.

The situation of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is similar to everything we saw in Doom on the Switch. Technically and graphically, it is far behind the PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions, but it has the attraction as the only handheld version of the game. Even though it feels slightly out of date in some places, it remains a great RPG with many hours of gameplay. If you have never played the game, but appreciate the genre, i highly recommend Skyrim. Do you have countless hours in Skyrim stopped, then you should consider the price the portability of this version justifies.

✔ The full Skyrim experience on a handheld; one of the best rpg's ever.

✖ 60 euros is a lot for a six year old game; vague graphics in TV mode; no mod support; dated in some places.

As much as I loved Skyrim I am not sure that shelling out $60 to buy a dated game would be worth it without it being graphically overhauled and a ton of new content being added. Now they are just milking it.

I'm down to invest countless hours of skyrim over again, it's been a while since I've done a playthrough but I'm split on getting it on Ps4 vr or on the switch, has anyone tried either???
