There are two certainties in life: every six months there is a new Marvel film in the bios, and every major media franchise now gets its own Lego game. One plus one is two, so game studio Tales comes with a sequel to the successful Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

The developers at Traveler's Tales have turned building entertaining games with virtual Lego into a true art. Whether it's Star Wars, Batman or Jurassic Park, every time they know how to hit the right chord with their playable parodies in block form. It is an art that gets bored at a given moment and with Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 that border is very emphatically looked up.

Anyone who has ever played a Lego game will not discover anything revolutionary in this latest part. Once again you have access to a dizzying number of Marvel characters, including not only all-stars such as Spider-Man and Captain America, but also obscure heroes such as Carnom and Chipmunk Hunk. Although the supply of characters has been drastically increased compared to the previous part, a number of heroes still shine through absence. For example, the X-Men and Fantastic Four are not to be seen in the game (presumably because Marvel does not have the film rights) and instead the Inhumans have been put in the spotlight.

Heroes you can build on

Although we are used to Lego games to ruminate the plot of existing films in a comic way, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 tells an original story. The big bathin this game is Kang the Conqueror, who has manipulated time and space to create the city of Chronopolis. This impressive stew of different times and locations from the Marvel universe such as Wakanda, Hydra, New York in 2099 and even underwater city Lemuria serves as the open world where your story missions start and on every corner of the street (or pyramid) a side mission or puzzle is waiting for you. Chronopolis, thanks to its mix of locations from various eras, is truly an impressive and above all fun city to explore, especially thanks to small details such as New York taxis driving through a medieval England.

Chronopolis also functions as an ideal excuse to bring all kinds of heroes together from various universes. In almost every story missions you visit a new Marvel location that also houses its own matching supervillain. There is clearly a lot of attention and love put into the making of iconic cottages from comics and movies, something that can also be seen in the enormously diverse cast of the game. Each hero has his own unique powers that you must use to complete puzzles and levels. Think of Ms. Marvel who shrinks to crawl through a ventilation shaft or Spidey who can stretch a rope between two platforms with his web.

Legoën without a manual

This way of puzzling is now an unmistakable part of the Lego games, but the formula gradually starts to get bored and even frustrate. This is mainly because the solution of a puzzle or the right way forward is not always obvious, so you sometimes have to search unnecessarily for the right solution. Especially considering the levels can be quite large and it is not always clear which puzzles belong to the main mission and which are meant for the Free Play mode, which you unlock only after clearing a level.

During the puzzling you are often also harassed by enemies, which you in most cases with some geram on the buttons to Lego-studs beats, but sometimes you have to work smarter. This applies, for example, to the bosses who are waiting for you at the end of each level. You usually play in a team of three to five superheroes, between which you can switch with a button. If you are in the vicinity of a team member during a fight, you can use the same button to perform an extra powerful combination attack. Therefore, it sometimes happens that you just miss the right timing to activate that attack and instead switch unwanted to another character. In the beginning it is inconvenient, in the long run simply irriant.

This makes it easier to lose track of things, and that in a game that is already quite hectic by nature. Especially the extensive boss battles in which you not only have to deal with the big bad guy, but also his accomplices and flying projectiles, are a big mess. Some battles can be won by simply banging on opponents, but in other cases you have to use Lego constructions and other puzzle objects in the arena. Again, it is not always clear what is being asked of you and you often hurt something, in the hope that it works.

Bugs of the non-superhero variant

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is plagued by small and larger, game-breaking bugs. The misery begins with computer-controlled characters who get stuck in levels or join in fights first, but then decide to do nothing in a corner. Occasionally i only found out after half an hour of searching that a passage did not want to open what should have been. It is not possible to reload a checkpoint, so the only solution is to restart the whole level.

Although it is extremely frustrating when such a thing happens, it is fortunately rare that bugs ruin your entire game. Beyond these technical imperfections, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a great Lego game that colors very neatly within the lines. Like predecessors, the game is the most fun in cooperative mode, not least because the puzzles can be solved faster because you do not have to switch between characters yourself. Although an online co-op mode is still lacking, a competitive Battle Mode has been added in which you fight against each other with up to four players, and a Splatoon-like mode where you have to play as many blocks as possible.

Colors. Unfortunately, both combat modes lack some depth and the balance between characters is hard to find, but for young players it is undoubtedly a nice addition.

That certainly applies to the new character creator, in which you can make your own superhero yourself. Unlike in previous parts, this time everything can be adapted to your character, from the color of lasers or other projectiles shot from the hands or eyes to the specific shape of a gun or other weapon. These minor innovations and additions are not enough to make the Lego series feel completely fresh again - that is why the basic needs to be changed - but the total package again guarantees dozens of hours of fun.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and will be released on 1 December for Nintendo Switch. This review was played on a PlayStation 4 Pro.

Conclusion

Whether you only watch the cinema films or are a seasoned Marvel fan, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 offers great entertainment as you are used to: a humorous story, lots of superheroes and gameplay that comes out especially in coöp. The bugs are easy to forgive the game, the well-known trick that Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is doing is now close to its expiration date.

The plus and minus points

✔ Full of love for Marvel, hundreds of playable characters, co-op remains fun, Chronopolis is fantastic to explore, extensive character-creator

✖ Irritating bugs that sometimes make entire levels unplayable, unclear action, solution of puzzles sometimes too unclear, lack of certain characters
