On a powerful adventure with your best Pokémon is the dream of everyone, whatever age you have. In the latest Pokémon games we dive into the beautiful Alola again, to become the best trainer ever with our Pokémon. But is the game the best ever? You can read that in this Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon review.

Even though this is a traditional Pokémon game where you have to collect and train Pokémon, a number of changes have been made since Sun and Moon. For everyone who has played Pokémon Sun and Moon, the beginning of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is a feast of recognition. You start with the same intro that leads to the same scene. But that scene is slightly different, as a first hint that this is not the game you're used to.

From that moment on it becomes clear that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are not like the old games. Developer Game Freak has done everything to make the Alola region look familiar but also different. The menu is different, the music has received a remix, the story and the characters are slightly different than in Sun and Moon. And that is not all.

Rotom, your new best friend

The biggest change you will encounter at first sight is Rotom. Your PokéDex is sitting on the chat and tells you whole stories, gives you tips and will ask you something about yourself every now and then. You can also play Roto Loto, a kind of wheel of fortune that gives you different powers that you can use in the game. If you become good friends with Rotom, he will give you his ultimate strength every now and then and you can use a Z-Move twice in a fight.

The announcement of this was cause for concern for some fans, Z-Moves are extremely strong and, according to the fans, there was certainly a reason why you can only use one per fight. But you will not get the option often and when you can use a Z-Move twice you will be relieved, not frustrated. You will use all the forces that Rotom gives you, even if it takes a while before you realize that you need them.

More difficult than you think

This is mainly because Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are more difficult than their predecessors. You read that correctly, Game Freak has answered the prayers and raised the difficulty level. For this the developer has applied a very simple method. Most trainers on your path have only one or two Pokémon.

Simple, but effective. Because less Pokémon means less exp. And this means that your Pokémon grow less quickly, so the important fights can be quite a challenge. Add to this that more Pokémon have been added to the games and you have unpredictable fights in prospect.

The story? You thought so!

Something that distinguish Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon from the previous games is how much you can do after you have become the Champion. There is actually a second story in the games and you can also easily spend a couple of days with this story. And there is much more to do!

So you can, for the first time, travel to other worlds via Ultra Wormholes . This way you can catch Ultra Beasts and encounter legendary Pokémon like Mewtwo. But you can also travel to a completely different world, where people live in a world without light. All in all, you're working on the game for about 20 hours if you leave all optional missions.

Slowly becoming the best

Because of all the additions, the game has become a bit slower. With some adjustment aside, Game Freak has added and extended things. Battles are also longer because your Pokémon is a lower level. Fortunately, you choose your first Pokémon faster than before and you do not have to listen to dialogues for minutes before the game starts.

Another point is that the game sometimes lingers on older systems. On an older 3DS or 2DS you will sometimes have to wait a few seconds for the fight to continue or until you enter a new area. When you start a fight with four Pokémon on the field and one or more Pokémon fly above the field, you can almost count the frames. This does not happen on the new 3Ds and 2DS.

Yet much of the same

Despite all the innovations and additions, many things will be familiar to you, the Festival Plaza has remained, and the only thing that has been added is the Battle Agency, a club where you can borrow Pokémon to win fights. Also the Ride Pager is back, which means that HM slaves are not needed. The trials are back, but renewed. And 'Call for help' , with all the frustrations that come with it, is also present in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon review - Ultra for a reason

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are all great Pokémon games, a must for every fan of the series. The games sometimes fall into the same pitfalls as Sun and Moon, but are much more extensive, so you can forgive the minuses faster. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon offer you more difficult battles, more story, more gameplay and more Pokémon. If you still doubt whether the game is worth it besides the original Sun and Moon, then we can reassure you, the game is all your time and money.

The plus and minus points

✔ More difficult than the original
✔ Much more story
✔ Not the same as Sun and Moon
✔ Rotom Dex is incredibly handy
✖ Sometimes a little slow
✖ Call for help is still frustrating

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!

Mate Im so excited for these eventhough ive yet to finish Pokemon Sun, so many games and too little means I start and go so far through but as we all know with Pokemon games, once you stop playing for a while its difficult to start off where you left it, and then you have to restart the game all over again lol, or is that just me.

been a while since I've played a pokemon game, maybe its time :)
