Game Review: Pharaonic Review - Lots of Dark Souls in Egypt

The Dark Souls series can get the blood under your nails as far as death is concerned. But this is not the only franchise that is strong in this. Developer Milkstone Studios now comes with a game that is at least so challenging and even shouts the most seasoned gamer of anger. Read in this Pharaonic review how this is right!

In Pharaonic you crawl into the skin of a captive Egyptian who is liberated by a priestess and appears to be elected. You must free Egypt from the claws of the Red Pharaoh. To do this, you must first create a character in a fairly simple character editor . Then you can get started.

Crucifixion through a torn Egypt

You get into a torn Egypt, where besides slavery under the tyrant's yoke a war is also raging. That means that there are armed people everywhere in the 2.5 D world, but also the rival creatures that want to make everyone down. The enemies range from smaller soldiers with swords or spears to larger opponents with a big bat or a huge sword and shield. All enemies, small or large, are quite dangerous.

In addition, they almost never pass beyond what makes the fighting more dangerous. To fight all these enemies you have a number of skills at your disposal: two attacks (hard and soft), the possibility of blocks and parrots. In addition, you can dodge, for example, by rolling forward or backward. Everything you do does need stamina and if your meter is empty you have a problem.

You can do nothing but walk and your enemies will keep you unhindered. In that case, a certain death will be put in place. However, in Pharaonic, you will often get out of the pipe if you do not master the control or even move a motion. The game is merciless, just like the titles in the Souls series.

Pick up or die

And if you die, you lose all experience, or your memories like it's called in the game that you've gained until then, and start at your last save point (which are pretty scarce). It is then a matter of picking up this again if you want to get a little stronger in the game. Fortunately, you'll also get the necessary equipment on the way, which can help your adventure. You'll find light and heavy variants of weapons, armor and shields, as well as rings and backpacks that help you through a status boost.

Think about something more life or some more stamina. Only in this area is Pharaonic merciless. You can only carry a certain weight unpunished with you. If you wear a harness or weapon that's too heavy, your stomameter will either slow down or get slower.

As a result, you can do less and thus go weaker, but by far Pharaonic is hardly difficult. You have three life-mixers to live your life for on-the-go. This refill can only be at scarce points in the world, so you have to be economical with it. It's Dark Souls pur song and that's great if you're looking for a challenge!

Pharaonic throws you in the depths of many more areas, such as the many sub boss and boss fights that the game knows. You can look forward to it all and no moment of your adventure is easy. You're on for at least 8 hours before you're halfway through the game and definitely 30 times to die again.

Knowing his problems

In this respect, the game is worth its money (only 20 euros!), Because if you are looking for a challenge you are definitely well. But the game also knows its drawbacks. The style in which you walk the game is one of. The world is then 2.5 dimensional and looks pretty cool and cartoony, but it is at the core of the biggest problem.

You can walk the various paths and corridors. But on all those paths you run the risk of an enemy running. And then you get free and for nothing an unexpected blow on your head. And you can not do anything about it because you do not see it coming.

The same goes for the objects in the foreground, so for the path you are walking, block the image. On the way there are falling traps you do quite a lot of damage. But you sometimes do not see these traps by passing a bush or a pillar. The consequence is the unnecessary waste of life energy.

The experience Pharaonic offers you is also really good at some small bugs in the sound. For example, the (otherwise very good) soundtrack will once again take precedence over the other sound that makes the game sound when played in a fish comeback. These little things are a bit annoying, but absolutely overlooked in relation to the aforementioned problems.

Pharaonic Review - The challenge after the Souls games

Pharaonic offers you just 20 Euro a pretty cool game that will help you out on every step. The game follows the Souls formula on a number of points and does it very well. In addition, the game with its 2.5D gameplay knows audiovisually quite well, even though there are some negatives to discover.

Casual gamers have been warned, this game will boil your blood within half an hour. He is really laid out for people who are looking for a challenge a la Dark Souls. And if you belong to that group of people, you must stop reading and go to the store, because Milkstone Studios has the next challenge for you!

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Do you embark on all levels
✔ Soundtrack is particularly strong and you get it for free
✔ Very much game for only 20 euros
✖ The sound sometimes sounds like a fish bowl
✖ The graphics style sometimes works well

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
