Game Review: Axiom Verge Switch Review - Fantastic Retrogame and Mandatory Cost for Switch Owners!

Regularly there are indie games that base the well-known Metroidvania genre. And sometimes there is a game that comes very close to the founder of the genre. Axiom Verge is one and that game is now out for the Switch. Why this game is so great are you reading in this Axiom Verge Switch Review!

The Metroid series has not been a new release for a number of years. Recently, there was a teaser of a new Metroid Prime and we were able to use the remake of Metroid 2, called Samus Returns. But further, it is suspiciously silent around the main line of the franchise. Fortunately, there is a Metroidvania game over and over which fans can deposit themselves.

A true Metroidvania worthy game

Axiom Verge is such a game and, in order to fall into the house, a damn good too. The game is made by Tom Happ and puts you in the skin of Trace, an employee in a laboratory. Something that goes awry with you makes you wake up in another dimension. How you get there, where you are right now and more importantly, how you get there is unknown.

You can explore this all in the nine huge areas that are the 30-euro- rich Axiom Verge rich. You start with your twelve hour adventure with no idea what is meant to be while an unknown voice appeals to you and tells you to pick up a weapon. After that you go on exploring and soon notice that you can not go anywhere for a long time.

As in Metroid, you need to look for your own way in the play area and upgrades. You will encounter new weapons, but also new skills. For example, there is a laboratory coat that allows you to teleport through thin walls and drill with which you can walk through the weaker walls. You'll also get enough upgrades for your weapons and your life meter, but upgrades mentioned earlier are more important.

Opposition falls a little

These ensure that you can reach previously unreachable areas, just as it is a Metroidvania game. The building of the levels is ingenious, leaving you motivated to walk a lot more often than once. Everywhere is something to find and more than once you will wonder what's behind that one door. You really want to discover the world and, though you will lose the road more often, or search for a space for over twenty minutes, you can not bother you.

On your path, you will of course also get the necessary resistance. Axiom Verge would be a pretty boring game if it were not. In almost every room you find enemies. Some simply navigate through space, but others shoot targeted at you or deal with everything they have in themselves.

And throughout the game you will encounter new variants of these opponents. Recycling enemies with a different color is a pity, but do not push the fun. Every now and then you enter a space, often close to a save point, where suddenly a huge creature stops. And that means nothing less than a big fight.

Control sometimes does not work

Even in Axiom, that is a bit different. The boss fights are generally not very challenging, if you at least get to know your upgrades and find the boss's weaknesses. Fortunately, they have been worked out and original.

The fact that the enemies are recycled and the bosses sometimes go a little too fast are easy, but it does not make the experience of the game any less. Unfortunately, it is unfortunately impossible to say about the control. During walking and jumping, Axiom Verge is well placed, but the shooting sometimes leaves much to be desired.

You can shoot eight games in the game, but if you want to pop up to the top left you'll go straight ahead. The result is often that you run out of a platform at your dead end while that is not the intention at all. This system is obviously from games like Contra, but unfortunately not perfected.

Fantastic retro style

Fortunately, Axiom Verge does not just turn it around. The real goal of Axiom is to discover and that, as reported, offers the game plenty of space. If you simply want to walk the game and reach the end, this can be done, but there is a lot to discover in the many dark crouchs that the world knows.

For the real explorers who want to see every corner and hole, there's more than 20 hours of fun playing with surprisingly much depth. For example, there are several documents to be found that tell a lot more about the real story behind Axiom Verge.

And it's definitely no trouble to discover this all. The game is amazingly designed. A modernized 16-bit style has been chosen that looks simple but amazing. And the soundtrack of Axiom Verge is one of the best things to do.

Every area has a new look, but also a completely new soundtrack. At one moment you are in a dirty cave full of (16-bit) corpses where a dark tone sounds and the other time you go outside where everything not only looks a lot more, but also the music (just) sounds more cheerful. Axiom Verge does everything in the audiovisual field almost perfect!

Axiom Verge Switch Review - Mandatory Cost for Switch Owners!

It is therefore a game that you should definitely have at home. And the Switch is a great platform for the game, given that you can take it away without having to think about it. You know (for sure at the beginning) not what you are doing in peace.

Unfortunately, the amazingly shaped game does have a few minuses like the end bosses and the control that sometimes opposes. But for twelve to 20 hours of fun, this 30 euro is really no money!

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Looks great
✔ Soundtrack is breathtakingly good
✔ Giant game world
✔ Invites to discover
✔ Spacious enough to do
✖ Enemies are recycled
✖ Less challenging bosses
✖ Control sometimes does not work

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
