DOOM Switch Review - DOOM in your fists

For years, it has been a kind of tradition to transfer the very first DOOM to any imaginable device. That way almost every console, phone, washing machine and printer (sometimes with a little hack) has a playable version of the legendary shooter. This tradition is now also held with the latest DOOM part, as it is now also playable on the Switch.

A great deal of what makes the most recent DOOM so genius is the technical powerhouse. The intense firefighters would not play half as well if the game would not run at a constant 60 frames per second. The fact that everything looks very tight and rugged makes the whole party complete. The Switch, however, has a lot less powerful hardware, and unfortunately, too, part of what DOOM loses so well.

Little technical wonder

For example, the Switch version must do 30fps and clearly less sharp textures. A sorry and at the same time understandable knee trap. However, it's a little wonder to mention how nice the game is still playing. As far as speed is concerned, this port seems hard to deliver and therefore the action is just as intense and brutal as on many stronger devices. Play for an hour and it does not even mean that the game does not run the best.

On the Switch DOOM also has the advantage of portability. In the train, on the toilet and in bed you can turn the demon many times round the neck. Ideal for first person shooters, the Joy Cons is not because of the uneven placement of the sticks, but this is a bit of a hassle. If you play this version docked and on the TV, the technical limitations are much higher. The framerate goes much faster when it gets a little busy on screen and that the environments are not so licked more looks also much more.

Rip and tear until it's done

If you have not played DOOM yet and do not have too many problems with the fact that this is clearly not the best version of the game, you still have to wait one of the best singleplayer shooters for years. In substance, DOOM on the Switch is exactly the same as the previously released version, in all its glorious glory. In DOOM you do not have to reload, but keep shooting until your warehouse is empty and in DOOM you do not have to look for a cover, but you should play as aggressively as you almost lay the lead.

The fire fighting in DOOM also has a murderous pace, which means that you have to keep quiet for a second and danger from all sides in the form of lugubere demons. With the special Glory Kills, you can put in when enemies are on the verge of death, make sure that they surround the most gruesome way and that you can recover health. Torn ticks, spilled skulls and exploded intestines make DOOM perhaps the most violent game on the Switch so far.

Get your ass to Mars

The weapons with which you warm up the enemies for such a Glory Kill are surprisingly versatile and, moreover, entirely customizable with all sorts of upgrades. For example, think of the grenade launcher for your shotgun or mini-missiles for your machine gun. How closely the gameplay does not collapse with this weapon is proven in Arcade mode, which allows you to play as "clean" in order to get medals in existing levels. The accompanying soundtrack of hard-wearing guitars is meanwhile nothing less than genial cherry on the cake.

Something less in your face is the story, which in its own subtle way is at least as such. The already fiction of the previous games is just taken in this part, but with a big wink. All brakes are completely loose in this area when you get deeper into the Mars base in later levels. Therefore, read the background information you can pick and get.

Portable Death Match

The DOOM's fantastic single player was the highlight of last year, but another part of the game might be better on the Switch. As far as multiplayer shooters are concerned, DOOM on Nintendo's console has much less competition. That this playing mode does not feel as unique as the single player is suddenly a bad deal.

As an online shooter, Doom with all downloadable content is included more than competent. The action still feels fast, there are cool maps and some playful modes, including a version of King of the Hill in which the hill moves constantly through the map. It is also possible to play bots when you do not feel like being finished by human opponents. With an extensive level system, free playable outfits and the ability to play yourself as a demon, DOOM is a completely different entertaining beast online.

Doom is available now on the Nintendo Switch for 59.99.

DOOM Switch Review - The diminished technical performance

DOOM on the Switch is perhaps the least way you can play this modern classic yet this game is also worth playing in this form. The diminished technical performance is the horrendous gameplay when the tip of a wicket is hardly in the way. DOOM still feels killing fast and so one of the biggest attraction in this transfer will not be lost. The multiplayer also comes out of the paint, making DOOM in all its damnation a very nice niche on the Switch.

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Doom on a handheld!
✔ Handsome transfer ...
✔ Great multiplayer
✖ ...but clearly the least version
✖ Joy Cons is not ideal for shooters
✖ Fill your hard drive

very amazing

Love your style of review and the points you made. I want to add one more, the price point. I think if Doom would've came out at a $30-$40 it would be more desirable. I would have say the large majority of people who wanted to play Doom have already done so and this would be a second purchase. As you mentioned its a hard to put down $60 down for a game that can be had in another platform for half the price and a better experience. If all you have is the Switch go for it. Seems like a fun version
