Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Preview - It seems enough to offer

It's been 8 years since a special fighting game was launched for the PSP, namely Final Fantasy Dissidia. This game combined all major protagonists and antagonists into one whole, in which they were able to absorb each other. Would you like to approach Sephiroth with Jecht of Leon? Then that would be possible! Now a few years later, it's time for a new part, called Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. I have already felt like this game. Does it seem to be male between the Tekkens and Street Fighters? Read on soon.

Trusted, but completely new

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT uses a somewhat different concept within the fighting genre than you are used to. Where you have to hit each other in almost every fighter until the lifebar reaches the 0HP, you have to pull a lot more out of this game to get this together. The game is based on the so-called 'Bravery' system, which is the core of the gameplay. This system gives you two basic attacks, namely 'HP Attacks' and 'Bravery Attacks'. With the latter attacks, make sure you collect points that ultimately represent the damage you divide with an HP Attack. In short, with Bravery Attacks, no damage will ever be done, because that can only happen with HP Attacks. However, with the Bravery Attacks you can make sure that the Bravery points are reduced to the opponent.

In Dissidia Final Fantasy NT you also have extra 'EX Skills'. This can be seen as a collection of buff moves that can give you and your team a boost in a fight. The EX Skills can ensure that a person's health is complemented, or that a person gains a boost in Bravery points or, for example, knows more defense. Together with the Bravery system, this is the basis of the gameplay and it's important that you take the time to get to know it. New arrivals can be robbed by the amount of info fired on you, so it is hoped that you will be building a solid tutorial.

You know me too... Hey, you're there again!

Now that the battle is a bit clear, it's time to look further at what the game is like. Where previously the PSPs were 1 vs 1, the battles are now 3 versus 3. That makes the game even more chaotic than before, but the game always keeps the overview and that is very nice. The battles can deal with a total of 26 characters from each of the Final Fantasy that have been published so far. Some examples include the Warrior of Light (FF I), Cain (FF IV), Kefka (FF VI), Vaan (FF XII) and of course Noctis from Final Fantasy XV. As a true fan you can not beat your luck, because the majority of characters come from an era that 3D gaming has not yet existed. So to see them in full glory with the current technology is crazy.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT also works this time with a class system, so the different characters all have their own class. Characteristics that fall under the Vanguard class are very strong, but slightly slower. Assassins are weaker, but faster. Marksman characters have more ranged attacks and Specialists possess movesets that are very unique to the rest. Each class, however, has a different class as weakness, so with a 3 versus 3 team, carefully check how the setup looks. A team of Assassins alone is not wise because they can be tackled quickly on their weakness. This also automatically invites you to play with everyone from the roster and to try out combinations.

Team Crystalis for the win!

The game is very competitive, but at the same time very strategic. Here's an example of how this works in practice. In every match i played - in the preview version at least - each team had three lives. With each defeated opponent one life begins and once the three lives are over, the other team wins. If the enemy team has one weaker player, it is wise to attack them every time. You are free in whom you attack and how many times you do that. So treating the weak opponent is also enough to win. Through this concept, strategy looks around the corner, because who takes what class and how do you address the opponents? This also ensures that each pot is different.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, of course, you can play online, but for the less challenging players there is of course the possibility to go solo through all the content. Still, the biggest focus of the game is playing with two more players. There is much to be seen when it comes to cooperation. Think about who will use EX Skill with any specific buffs? Or what Summon is chosen? Talking about Summons, you have different choices and each Summon is from a Final Fantasy game. They all make a grand appearance in the midst of a fight and each of the Summons has its own advantage, which brings another spectacle. In short, the game seems to offer plenty of opportunity to tackle a match, which results in a lot of variation in the action.

There may still be some keying

These options, of course, all sound very convenient and practical for a fight, but for the time being it sounds more beautiful than it is. This is because you've come to a close with only the HP and Bravery Attacks. In fact, I realized that I used the EX Skills only to see what they were doing and holding. That instead of effectively applying in a fight. Over the gameplay in general, it is also possible to say something, because for now the combat felt a bit of a tear. Performing an attack requires some timing and it's not as fast as it seems initially. Even when you get hit, you end up on the ground for quite some time, so the flow of the gameplay is broken. In short, it does not feel optimal.

The latter - lying on the ground - is a bit worried, because it takes really long before you can continue the fight. Additionally, you can be attacked if your knockout is on the ground. As a result, you may be stunlocked for some time without being able to do anything about it. However, the development team still has the time before the game ends, so it is important that some attention is paid to the balance of the gameplay. It is hoped that this will be optimized, otherwise the game will know just too many interruptions in the flow.

It seems enough to offer

Despite this point of criticism, i must honestly admit that i had a lot of fun while playing the game. It's simply great to see how all the characters of the franchise are in this game. In addition, the graphics are very attractive, because the characters know all the beautiful details and the moves that shake them out of their sleeve look amazing. Nothing is more impressive than Sephiroth to see someone completely crushed with his Octoslash to name but a few. In addition, the game runs at a solid 60 frames per second and therefore the action looks extra crisp.

Preliminary Conclusion

Dissidia and Dissidia Duodecim were excellent on the PSP and fun fighting games and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT revived this amazing concept. Graphically, i am already very impressed with the game, because it's simply amazing to see all the characters from now with the technology of now. The special effects of the moves look as authentic as you are used to in the franchise. However, i am still concerned about the gameplay flow, because it used to be a bit faster and faster, it now feels so heavier and more strategic. Although this does not necessarily have to be a negative, a striking balance and proper flow is important. It is a matter of balance finetunen and i hope that this will be alright as soon as the game ends at the end of January 2018.

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
