Syberia Switch Review - As if the clock had stopped

The Nintendo Switch has quickly developed a rather large collection of games. Due to all the major titles that come out of the Switch, a game like Syberia may underneath. Is it a good idea to buy this classic puzzle game? That is what you read in my Syberia Switch review.

You start Syberia, a puzzle game, and the first thing you see when you enter an old and deserted village is a funeral test. First of all, an exciting game is as big as a human being. You leave for the hotel where you stay and will be greeted by a metal man who takes off his hat before you enter. You are Kate Walker, a lawyer in this village to arrange for a client to sell a company, but you soon find out that the person who has to sign the papers has passed away.

The power of recognition

This is about Syberia's atmosphere with a realistic character in a surrealist setting. Everything in Syberia is just a little different than expected. So you have robots with a soul and a train station that also serves as a botanical garden. The world of Syberia is at the same time recognizable and incomprehensible and draws you in.

A good example recognizable is how Kate can be called by friends and family at random times. You can stand next to a train to be excited as an old toy and suddenly called by Kate's mother. That way, you'll take a part of the real world with you while you're having a fantastic adventure.

You are following Kate in her mission to transfer an old factory to a client from America. But there is more going on in the sleepy old village than you think and together with Kate you are soon interested in finding out all mysteries to the bottom. Meanwhile, Kate has to find the only remaining heir to the factory, a trip that pours her across Europe.

Totally taken care of

The conversations Kate carries on her cellphone are usually not required for puzzles, but they give a good insight into her character and background. You can also talk with all characters to learn more about the location, story, and characters. All of these conversations have been spoken, but also have text that you can read so you do not have to miss anything.

The developer's attention for the game did not end with additional conversations. Every environment has been devised to the point and you will often come to an environment and look forward to your eyes before continuing your mission. To be amazed when the game gives a close up of something you want to use. The attention to detail is unbelievable.

Being stuck in a puzzle game, but otherwise

The original version of Syberia was released in 2002 for the PC. Of course, Syberia is already fifteen years old and appears in some scenes as if Kate was stuck in the vicinity by a beginner in Photoshop. And the details in the area sometimes cause you to get stuck behind barriers that you can not see. You also need to move precisely to walk along, because the game gives you invisible barricades.

That's not the only way you get stuck. The control for Syberia is usually easy, but if you press the button to run at the wrong time, your game will be jammed. Fortunately, the game automatically saves you and you can shut down and turn on Syberia without losing too much progress. This automatic save of the game is an addition to the Switch version, you can also walk with both JoyCons analog sticks and do not have to click to go anywhere.

The key to success

Syberia may be a jigsaw puzzle game, but you will be looking for keys for the most time. Keys for doors, windows and writing tables can usually be found by simply looking good around you. All devices, from the robot that opens the graftombe to the train you travel, also need keys to be excited.

The puzzles are generally not difficult. Like most games of this genre, Syberia is especially alert and remembered. Fortunately, Kate is carrying a notebook in which she keeps her missions. Also, the game is forgiven and you can not put objects in the wrong places. Also, Kate will refuse to perform tasks that are no longer necessary and items that you no longer need will disappear immediately from your inventory.

Do you hear that too?

This way you quickly get into the game and then you can scare the game at certain times because of the loud sounds that the game produces. These sounds then prove to be Kate's footsteps in the grass. Syberia generally has good sound effects and we did not expect grass to crack as bad under Kate's shoes. Fortunately, this does not happen very often and most sound effects fit into the environment.

One small point i have to report is that the game sometimes becomes completely silent and plays music again when you solve a puzzle. If you are less fast with puzzles, you will hardly hear anything for a long time. Sometimes the music is getting fierce when it comes back and that can even break your concentration.

Syberia Switch review - More than an exciting game

It's clear why this game is a classic, Syberia is a great game that will take you to your tricks. Whether you're a fan of the genre or not, Syberia is a game that goes beyond puzzles and adventure. A game that, despite some shortcomings and in spite of age, knows a story in a fantastic world. And if it's up to me, it's a game you definitely have to play once.
