Two years ago Ghost Games brought us the reboot of the Need for Speed franchise and that game was okay. It was not the sublime comeback of the franchise, but as an arcade racer, this game was definitely his male. In the meantime, Ghost Games has started with Need for Speed: Payback, a game that takes the foundation of the previous part and continues to expand. That in a whole new area, with new characters and of course an accompanying story. I could get started and share the first impression with you here.

Fortune Valley is huge

Need for Speed: Payback, like its predecessor, has an extensive playing field in which you can race freely. The location of service this time Fortune Valley, which has gained its inspiration from Nevada and Las Vegas. But in order to accommodate enough variation, Ghost Games has made it as fictitious as possible. So next to a desert you will also find mountain areas, forests and more. The world is varied, big and there is plenty to do to keep you busy for a long time, as it seems at least in my play session, where i have experienced the beginning of the game.

In addition to missions that make the story, the huge gaming world offers all sorts of edge issues to entertain you. Think of loose races that you can do with racers you're coming across. The search for (casino) chips that make your money, fly by billboards, take chances, drive and speed-up challenges. All this initially seems optional, but if you want to free more opportunities in the game, you are forced to keep busy with the edge activities. This way, you can only tune certain parts of your cars once you have achieved an x-number of stars at a certain number of jumps or speed traps.

The completion of this has been done in its own right, because the players must, to a certain extent, engage in the peripheral activities. Only then do you play more opportunities. The downside is, however, that if you do not get into it, you are somewhat obliged to keep busy with that kind of business. Of course, cosmetic tuning is optional, but considering being a favorite feature of the franchise, it is possible to discuss whether it is useful to throw it as an unlock behind edge activities. That discussion is for later, because what eventually matters in the game is of course the racing itself.

Different types of races

In the game you can take the role of multiple characters and each has their own specialties. The one is good at street races, the other is good at drifting and off-road racing and another is able to race well. In total there are five types of races with associated cars that you can freely release. After a fairly long introduction you get more freedom to drive races and earn money. With that money you can then buy new cars and you are building your garage more and more.

Riding in Fortune Valley is quite entertaining. The game is initially limited in possibilities because you are forced to rebuild yourself to the top by a setback. Ultimately, the goal is to include it against The House, a mysterious organization that controls everything in the big city and around it and does not regain some criminal activity. However, before starting to race at the bottom of the ladder and racing against all sorts of crews around the city, you work on your reputation.

The racing itself is as arcade as possible, and that is of course characteristic of the franchise. If you have played the previous parts, you can step in and drive again, because in that sense it is very familiar. The races are quite challenging, as each race requires a certain level. Not so much in skills, but in the qualities of your cars. The quality or level of your car is determined by the modifications you have made and the higher your car's level, the easier it becomes a race.

These modifications are basically just upgrades that are applicable to six parts of your racing show. This can be purchased with your credits in the tune-up shop, but you will also receive upgrade cards after completing a race. This is always arbitrary, so sometimes it is something that you can apply equally, sometimes you decide if you exchange money. That's a nice system, but in the few hours i played i noticed that i had to lock at a certain level at some point. This because i did not have enough money for modifications that caused the car to reach the desired level.

It's a bit awaiting how it will develop in the rest of the game, but if you play after three hours you have to do races multiple times for more money then that's just not that fun. In addition, the races are varied in route, but nowhere really memorable. It's just not that fascinating, partly due to the initially slow progress. With this, after a rather spectacular start, you fall into a hole and the game has to be scratched again. Or, eventually, i hope that i will be happy to tell you later in the review.

Laughing... bad

Finally, something else that is a little worried, namely the story and the characters. Now Need for Speed has never had to have its story, which proved to be the previous game. However, it remains to be seen whether Ghost Games has learned from her mistakes, because the story and characters presenting this game are not so much soaps. It's full of plot holes, the characters are not interesting and especially annoying with funny intended remarks that completely miss the shelf. That's based on four hours of play, so I hold my heart.

Preliminary conclusion

Need for Speed: Payback has to be a racer's racer and even though it's all right in racing, i am having some reservations for some of my concerns. Starting at the start is not really a start you want in a game, and locking certain things behind edge activities might be a little awkward design choice. The story is no longer followed after a quarter and the characters are more annoying than fun and that's exactly where the whole game was built around. Not a good start, but i look forward to the rest of the adventure and in my review i will tell you soon if the game is worth it.

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
