The Intruder

Patty turned off the television and regretted playing a scary movie while she was home alone. Most nights she would spend online with other people, so she didn’t feel alone. But tonight, she felt very alone. After a few minutes of uncertainty, Patty lifted herself from the couch and headed to the kitchen for a snack.

She heard a ruckus in the backyard while she was deciding between a ham sandwich and a smoothie. Patty stopped and listened. It sounded like the garbage cans. She knew the raccoons were always trying to get into the garbage, and she remembered her father’s words.

“You hear those raccoons in the garbage again you had better shoot them.”

Patty didn’t want to shoot any raccoons, but she knew if she didn’t do something she would have a big mess to clean in the morning. She found her father’s gun that was hidden behind the china and prepared to shoot. She wasn’t going to shoot them as her father asked, but she would shoot near them to scare them off.

Slowly she turned on the outside light and headed to the garbage cans; gun in hand; locked and loaded. Before she could get to the cans the raccoons heard her footsteps and took off. She let out a sigh of relief. She stepped closer. Patty reached for the can to set it back upright and saw it move again. She stood back and prepared to shoot.

A starving puppy backed out of the can, whimpered, and looked at Patty for help.
