There had been reasons for the murder, but Detective Matthews knew they had little to no evidence. It was apparent that the woman had been suffocated. It was the way she was flung over the balcony that made him scratch his head. Was it an extra payback? Was death not enough?

The murderer left no clues. Detective Matthews interviewed the witnesses and the neighbors who claim they heard nothing. Of course, he thought dead girls don’t scream when you throw them off a balcony. There had to be someone who saw a visitor coming in the apartment building or knew her well enough to know she was being harassed, followed; anything.

Did people no longer pay any attention to their surroundings? He watched a group of kids walk past with their heads down looking at their phones. Another of the residents sat in their chair on the sidewalk doing the same thing. All of them oblivious to this woman’s demise.

He would have the police run a next-of-kin search, but somehow, he knew the quest would come up empty. This girl meant nothing to those around her. What were the chances she meant anything to anyone far away?

The sad truth was she only was important to the person who murdered her and left her splattered on the sidewalk.
