The Floating Bones

The bones were scattered for acres. It looked like a war zone, but it was merely the water and the earth’s unquenchable thirst. Howard looked at the grave yard and wondered how he was supposed to clean up such a mess.

Most of the gravesites were flooded, the mud had slid aside, and the caskets rose above the ground. They were knocked over by the flooding water, and the bones of the deceased floated in nearby pools.

Howard called his co-worker for advice. When he saw the mess, he was just as perplexed as Howard about what to do.

“Have you ever seen such a mess?” Howard asked.

“I can’t say that I have. How are we supposed to put the right bones in the right caskets?”

“That’s the same question I was going to ask you. I mean there is no way to know which bones belong to which grave. And what about the holes. They will take some time to drain. Should we leave it as it is until the water lowers?”

“What if it doesn’t stop raining? The bodies could be washed down the road a mile. There’s no telling what kind of animals will come by looking to gnaw on them.”

“This is more of a problem then I first thought. I don’t what to do. Maybe we should call the police.”

“Good idea. Maybe they will know what to do.”
