The Math

The scarf Teri wanted to buy was on sale for 40% off. She didn’t know how much she wanted the scarf until she saw the tag. It had been a tough decision to pick between the long green scarf and the short blue scarf, but she thought this sale price would settle it.

Now all she had to was figure out the math to be sure. The blue scarf was 10.00 and the green scarf was 18.00. She loved the green scarf, but blue was her favorite color and matched most of her clothes. Now she had to figure out what 40% off 18.00 was to be sure she was getting the bargain she had hoped.

She pulled her cell phone from her pocket and headed to the calculator application. Each time she used it she thought of the math teachers in school who would say they wouldn’t have a calculator around all the time. Boy were they way wrong.

She punched in the numbers and calculated how much 40% off 18 dollars was. It came to seven dollars and twenty cents, making the total for the scarf $10.80. That wasn’t much of a difference in price. So, after all the math and decision making of this task, Teri decided she had liked the blue scarf better before and it was the cheaper of the two. If only by a few cents.

In the end she concluded 40% off the green scarf wasn’t enough of a price reduction to make her change her favorite color.

Also, she now needed a drink because math is hard.
