It was a special occasion for his mother to stop by for a visit. He loved it when she did. For the visit she would always make his favorite chicken noodle soup. It would take her hours of boiling vegetables and chicken. The entire house would smell for hours of the wonderful, flavorful concoction.

Herbert knew that time had been running out for his mother, and each visit was treasured more than the last; knowing that it could be the last. It was a bittersweet experience. But she reminded him that every time we spend with other people could be the last, and that we just don’t think of it like he does when he thinks about her.

“I’ve lived a long-life Son.” She would say and somehow that made him feel a little better. Still, he couldn’t bear the thought of her leaving him. Instead of thinking this could be the last time, he talked about the future. “Next visit Ma, you should bring some of that fresh Italian bread I like so much.”

Those words made her smile. He knew she didn’t want him thinking sad things before her time ended.
