Dining Out - Sushi Dragon
Sushi Dragon
Those lights from inside made it quite tough to get a decent shot of the front. That and not being able to go further back
I felt like sushi and had noticed that my local take away was shut for some renovations, so decided to combine a walk to the beach with some sushi-go-round. It's a 2km walk for me down to the beach, and after a bit of a wander I decided it was time for dinner.
I was greeted and shown to my seat, sadly on the tail side of the conveyer, so anything from the kitchen would have to take almost a full lap to get to me. This wasn't an issue as I wasn't intending on ordering anything special, but is something I consider when being seated.
Opposite me and the cold sushi making area was a wall of photos of past happy customers
The staff were quite good, and attentive, but were quite happy to leave me alone when I said I didn't need anything else once I had my drink. I sat and watched the varieties of sushi go past, checking for options that I can and can't have. Part of finding a good sushi place for me revolves around my ability to just sit down and pick stuff to eat. If too many of the dishes contain avocado (the most likely of my allergies to be present), then it's going to make the dining experience less enjoyable. As I find in a lot of places, most of the rolls contained avocado, or were unclear if there was any in it or not through the cover, or hidden under the sauce.
I was able to pick this one at least. Chicken Katsu and Processed Cheese, with a mild chilli sauce
I started with this one (above), but sadly it made for a pretty disappointing start to the meal. The chicken could have been juicier, the cheese didn't really add anything to it, and the sauce was bland and lacking in heat or destinctive flavour. These things happen though, so on to the next option.
Seared salmon nigiri, mayo and a soy based sauce
After the dissappointing start, I decided to try one of my staples from any sushi location. This was reasonably well done, but it had been sitting too long, as the sauce had gotten into the rice and helped it fall apart while eating it. Far from the best I'd had, but at least it was an improvement over the first dish.
Tuna nigiri. I think it was seared then sliced.
Next up I went with what looked like sliced seared tuna nigiri. I really shouldn't have. It was pretty ordinary, and very underwhelming. I decided after 2 failures from 3 dishes that I was done and headed home.
It's not often I don't have a good meal from a sushi train, but this was one example where I'd have been better off picking somewhere else. It might be because it was pretty quiet when I was there, and when it's busier there'd be a better turnover of sushi, but I prefer dining when it's quieter, and other sushi trains can manage to be successful in their slow times. This one for me sadly is a miss. I say sadly because it's my closest train.

Oh sad that this one was a bit if a fail :( maybe they were having a bad day. Guess they can't all be great unfortunately :)
Did you have a nice wander?

Yeah, they might have been having an off day. I might have been having an off day. It all might have accumulated to a not great experience. Sadly (for them) there are plenty of other options, so I don't have to return to them to find out if it was out of character or not.
The wander was quite good though, which is usually the case
I'm not a big sushi lover @ratticus but your images sure do look interesting. I'm sorry your visit to this sushi train was a disappointing one for you and I don't feel like I am missing out eating sushi for a while. To tell you the truth, I was more interested in admiring your beautiful little daughter. What a gorgeous smile she has. I must visit more often to see her progress. Have a great week.
I know many people don't like sushi, for whatever reason, and that's perfectly fine, but for me it's one of the best and simplest 'finger foods' that can be done in such a way it can be super casual or really fancy. And there is such a range to what it actually is.
My daughter is awesome and I'm considering doing more regular posts about her, rather than needing an image in a filler post because my health or real life commitments have gotten in the way of my schedule again. She's just over 3 months and already almost rolling over on her own. I can just tell she's going to be trouble (because she's mine :) )
Well, I for one will really enjoy seeing more posts about your daughter @ratticus I'm a very family oriented grandmother and have always enjoyed babies. Now that my 7 grandchildren are all growing up I have to get my baby fix else where. (lol) I remember just how time consuming babies are and even when I had plenty of chores to do, I'd much prefer playing with my babies and making the most of every milestone.
I smiled when I read your observations regarding your daughter....."going to be trouble" (because she's yours) At least you are preparing yourself for what lies ahead. Make the most of these precious months and years ahead as they grow up so fast. (lol)
I just took Henry to Kintaro? At eight, he's getting curious about different flavours, and forged through some eel, and salmon. He wanted to finish off with a green cake, but it was actually like firm green custard? He wasn't a big fan.
Nice to get out one on one and have an outing in the school holidays :)
Eel is another thing I love, but didn't have any this time. The green cake sounds like it was a green tea or matcha custard. They can both be pretty firm sometimes, and either could have a flavour that he'd not necessarily like.
Sounds like a nice meal out with your son though
