Of Peking Duck And Duck Burger : The Traditional And The Contemporary

The city of Beijing is a food haven and while my wife Roselind and I were there, we had to try the iconic Peking Duck. This dish has been prepared since the days of the Emperor and we were informed that the way the duck was cooked since centuries ago had not changed much. We went to a restaurant "Taste Of Dadong" established in 1985 which was famous for that dish.


The duck meat is perfectly sliced. What is most important is that the skin must be thin and crispy.


These condiments such as spring onion, cucumber, turnip, sweet bean sauce and even sugar were served together with the duck.


The sweet bean sauce has to be spread on the pancake first before adding the vegetables, meat and skin.


The pancaked was then rolled and ready to be eaten.


Vegetable soup with it's own warmer.


The prawn meat balls were also delicious.


The candy floss was on the house. I loved the way it was creatively presented with an artificial plant.


The "Taste Of Dadong" restaurant was quite full and I noticed that most of the patrons ordered Peking Duck.

And the verdict? The duck skin was thin and crispy and we enjoyed the meal thoroughly. We did not actually sought out the duck burger intentionally but since we came across this cuisine by chance, we thought we will give it a try. Unlike the traditional Peking Duck, this is a Chinese version of the western burger with the patty being replaced by duck meat instead of the normal beef and chicken.


Not surprisingly, the venue "DaDong Duck" serving the burger looks like a typical fast food joint.


The menu offers a range of choices.


Coincidentally DaDong Duck was also established in 1985 and the same is quite similar to "Taste of Dadong". I can't help wondering these two restaurants are operated by the same group of companies.


The duck burger and it tasted different from a beef or chicken burger.


The burger came with fries.


The set meal included chicken nuggets.


The Chinese twist to the combo, meat moon cake which was an interesting addition.


The whole combo meal was very filling.

We were glad that we had the opportunity to try the duck burger because I am not sure whether I can find another country that has this dish. Just as Peking Duck and Duck Burger represent the traditional and the contemporary respectively, life in Beijing is also a mix of the traditional and the contemporary.

I like the traditional version more, it's a lot healthier. Looks great, I'd eat it anytime! Not the burger though :)
