Wandering Spark - Part 50
The father looked at him and took two barrels, he walked to the catchments.
Varan caught up with him:
"For what? What they're saying?"
His father, without looking, shook his head:
"Immediately upstairs. That's what they say. Today."
Varan laughed with sad laughter:
"They do not understand that the screw..."
"They'll send for you," his father said, opening the lodgement door. "They'll send ... someone. The guardian. I'm thinking maybe..." Father hesitated.
"What?" Varan asked softly.
"A boat," said his father, still not looking. "Take a boat. They won’t find it in the fog. Go away somewhere, even to Maltown ... There in the mines, you can hide. Even for the lifetime..."
Small, throaty shivers crawled over Varan’s skin. What Father said was from another life. From a crazy dream. He remembered the fugitive Nila was talking about, the one who lived in the caves even during the season and probably saw Shuu...
"Do you think I'm to blame for something?!"
The father looked at him, wrinkled like an empty wineskin, and again turned his eyes away:
"What is the difference if they send guard..."
"But they let me go!"
"They let go because where can you go? They know that you are tied and cannot run away. You can hide in the fogs."
"I what need to hide in fogs all my life?!"
The father drew himself and went away, and Varan stood still for a long time, watching rainwater run down the chute.
On the shore stood a small gray wingam, nervously stepping over its feet. Children and adults from all over the village tossed their affairs and up in a wide circle, not daring to approach.
Wingam shook the seaweed from its clawed fingers with disgust. It strained and folded yellow membranes on the paws. It flared feathers, flapped its wings, scattering a fan of spray. Beside hit back to the bird stood a Gorni in a silver-black armor of the upper guard. He was waited for something, having crossed his arms. His face was covered with a frequent cloth net with steel rings. From under the net, white steam busted out with heavy breathing.
He doesn’t see anything, Varan thought. Just now there was a sun, a dazzling light through a protective net... The bottom for him is now darkness.
It is easy to fight him now, Varan thought and to hijack the wingam...
It must be Shuu brings such thoughts. Wingam won’t welcome a stranger and at best will throw him into the sea. And at worst... an attack on the guard is a terrible crime. It is equated to robbery and manufacture of counterfeit money...
Villagers moved in sides before Varan, and it is unclear what was more in this silent movement - disgust or fear.
"I'm here," he said, stopping a few steps from the bird. The guard turned his head. He finally threw the net from his face.
Varan opened his mouth.
"Hello there," said his mightiness, the Imperial magician, and smiled at the edge of his mouth. "Let’s go?"
