Varan, holding the net, watched Nila hurriedly putting the saddle on Kruchina's back first, then Zhurbina (both snake-ears willingly set their backs on). Then, without looking at Varan, Nila pushed herself away from the stone ledge, and flew to Kruchina on her back; the owner neatly nestled on Zhurbina's back.

"Well, Varash, we won’t be here until night. Clean this place, take the basket out - and you can rest a bit. You must spend the night here, remember!"

Varan nodded hastily.

"Come on!" Cried Nila, and her voice rumbled over the grotto. Kruchina struck her tail, the Nile crouched, spreading over the black scales. The next second, the serpenter ducked, went into the tunnel under the rock, carrying the rider with her. Varan took a breath.

"Follow her," the master ordered quietly, and Zhurbina dived too. Varan was left alone; the water, illuminated by the sun, was perturbing, from above transparent, from below frozen, pressed into impenetrable bottom darkness.

"Serpanters. Well, you know, common folk call them snake-ears in common speech. Two big monsters, one green, the other almost black. Huge horns and teeth. Their tail can kill a human. Very dangerous work. For that is good pay."

Varan sat at the table of his father's tavern, and Kesha, a fourteen-year-old guy hired by his parents in Varan's place, stood opposite him with a tray and looked with envious envy.

"To know everyone comes to them to gawk, who more honorably - and to drive. In the stone, you know, moves - to Shuu. And under the water, and over the water, and there are very dry..."

"And how do snakes in dry people walk?" Keshka asked.

"Snakes do not go at all," Varan said sternly. "They're swimming ... I've been there once." He pegged in coins in a leather purse. "I have a night watch tonight."

Before the night watch, there were still several hours, but Varan was tired of lying. He said goodbye to his mother, patted the maligns over the scruff of his neck and, with a quick step, the busy man moved to the shore-to bathe.

"Hey, pal!"

Varan continued to walk. Few men go around the streets during the season; stopped when the road came two. One - the same age, short and swarthy, but apparently not hot. The other is an adult, and at one glance at him, Varan became frightened.

"Why do not you look back when you call?" The young man began.

"How do you know who I am?" snapped Varan.

"Let’s go. We have a business offer for you."

"I'm in a hurry."

"At the bottom, you will have time," with the edge of a mouth was noticed by the stranger. "Come on... bustler."

He had burnt light eyebrows and indifferent, like a hammer, the look of a murderer.
