Chapter 31:Engine

Bella and Jack had finished their reading of the biology book.
“I’m a little scared by some of this Jack” said Bella.
“It will be okay Bella” said Jack, “We will take it slowly. Maybe do some other things we liked to do together before we had any idea what sex is.”
“Like cuddle?”

“Yes and maybe I can touch your tumours… sorry I mean breasts again”
They looked around the dining room where they were seated. It was odd being back in the old house, especially with just the two of them. Nathan had the kids. They were going to do this reproduction thing that the organisation wanted checked out.
“Some special time together before we do this should be good” said Bella, “And look, I did something for you.” She pulled her pant leg up. Jack gasped.
“You kept your fur on” he gasped, “That is great. You look Banbazoidian”.
“Yeah I stopped shaving it off for a bit for you” said Bella.
There was silence for a moment.
“So” said Jack, “Should we go in the bedroom?”
They smiled at each other.
“Let’s do it” said Bella, “Let’s cuddle”.
They went off to the bedroom for their special time before they reproduced.

Nathan breathed deeply. He walked into his spare room. He noticed Maree busily at work at his desk.
“What are you doing Maree?” he asked.
“Finding out some stuff from the organisation” answered Maree, “Jack is a bit upset”
“What? He’s over the moon. He finally gets to reproduce”
“That’s only temporary arousal for Jack. He is actually quite upset. After all this talk and study on reproduction and after Bella telling him her full story about her pregnancy and leaving the organisation he is upset because he doesn’t know who is his mother. Normally Banbazoidians would not care. Reproduction is a business process unrelated to love and caring. But after being down on Earth and experiencing the full range of emotions and seeing how humans are with their offspring, it is really bugging him. I have requested to find out who birthed each of us.”

“How do you explain asking such questions?”
“I don’t really need to. Adminees stick together and don’t ask too many questions. However I still did explain it by saying I needed it for information on the health of our Banbazoidian ancestors so we can see if historical or genetic health factors in our Banbazoidian ancestry have an effect on the health of our human bodies.”
“Fair enough, but adminees?”
“Admin workers” said Maree, “Want to wait with me? This might take a while.”
Nathan glanced around the room, then at his watch.
“Okay Maree, I have nothing else to do right now anyway” said Nathan and he sat down.
They sat waiting for a while, not chatting much. Nathan picked up the newspaper and started reading. He gently rubbed the edges of it with his fingers.

After a while Nathan muttered, “Six months”
“What?” said Maree.
“Oh nothing” said Nathan, “Just thinking to myself. Didn’t mean to talk out loud”.
“You said six months” said Maree. She walked around behind Nathan and looked at the newspaper. She saw a headline, “Budget set to go through.”
“I saw that on the TV” said Maree, “Nathan is the reason you are always here that you don’t have work?”
“Yes” sighed Nathan, “I was made redundant at work shortly before you guys turned up. That’s why my life is crap. I've been trying to get another job with no success. If this change to the law goes through when it says it will, it will be slightly before I would be due to get some government help under the old system which means instead of waiting a few weeks I will be waiting six months if I don't find work. If I don’t find work in that time it is enough time to cause major problems. I could run out of money and not be able to feed myself let alone all of you, it will be unlikely I will have the money for rent and what they are doing is really stupid because it will do this to other people too. There's not enough jobs for the amount of people looking”
Nathan held his head in his hands.
“And now I’ve actually fallen for a married woman to top off this stress. I can’t stop thinking about her but I can’t do anything about it”.
“Nathan, it’s okay. We’ll work everything out. And as for Bella, I’ve already told you what I think of the fake marriage and also do you realise how many females are on Earth?”
“Not just any random female is the right one Maree” said Nathan.

They sat in silence for a moment longer. Then a portal opened which could not been seen through but which some documents appeared in.
“The results of the mother test” said Maree. She picked them up and looked through them.
“Hey that’s funny” she said smiling, “Bella and Jack have the same mother.”
“What?!”
“They have the same mother” said Maree, “Look”.
She passed the papers to Nathan pointing at the names.
“Sharleen Heerloop and Sharleen Heerloop”. Nathan stared at it for a moment. Then he remembered, ‘He had set those two up to have sex!’. He felt sick. He grabbed the nearby office bin and threw up into it. Maree stared at him disgusted.
“Why did you eject nutritional sludge?” asked Maree.

“They have the same mother and they’re going to have sex” said Nathan.
“Yeah?” said Maree confused.
“That’s wrong”
“Is it?”
“Yes, gee you really don’t have any understanding of this stuff at all, do you guys? You don’t do that with family members. “
“Why?”
“It’s wrong. It’s sick. It's gross.”
“Okay” said Maree.
“Come on” said Nathan, rushing out the room, “We need to stop them.”
Maree followed Nathan and they got Max to come with them once he got out of the bathroom.
As Maree followed all she could think was, ‘I bet he’s been waiting for an excuse to stop this happening this whole time.”
They jumped into the car and Nathan quickly started the engine and off they rushed.
