Chapter 18: Second

“So you are all from another planet called Banbazoia where there is an organisation that controls most of the people and the people outside the organisation are just hated?” summarised Nathan, looking at Bella, Max, Maree and Liam.
“That’s right” said Bella.
“And you are all running out of resources so you have come here to use ours?” said Nathan.
“That’s right” said Bella, “I am an outsider to the organisation and so is Max but we were chosen for this mission. Maree is actually middle aged in her original form and worked in administration for the organisation. Jack worked for the organisation and Liam was a successful businessman”.
Nathan looked at Liam, who was sitting on Bella’s lap sucking his foot. Liam pulled his foot out of his mouth and looked at Nathan.
“Liam could talk when we first moved here” continued Bella, “He just didn’t around humans. But something seems to be wrong with him. Since when we got to your place he doesn’t seem to be able to talk to us anymore.”
“Okay” said Nathan, “So you’re all aliens and nothing is what it seems. The primary school child is an adult, the baby is an adult, the teenager is …” He looked blankly at Max.
“I was an adult too” said Max.
“An adult” continued Nathan, “And you’re telling me I have a successful businessman alien sitting in my lounge room in a nappy sucking on his foot?”
“That’s right” said Bella, “We had to all be different ages to make sure all ages could assimilate with your people because we could not all come down at the same age or there would be no explanation for heaps of extra children or adults or babies.”

“So you definitely come in peace?” asked Nathan. Bella nodded.
“I wonder why Liam can’t talk anymore” said Nathan.
“I don’t know” said Bella, “I was annoyed at him for not stopping crying to tell me why he was upset before, but it’s clear now he can’t tell me anything.”
Liam pointed to his mouth and then shrugged his shoulders.
“I’d take it by that he doesn’t know why either” said Nathan. Bella did a tremendous sneeze. Her appearance flickered back and forth between the human disguise and her true form.
“We had better get you some medicine” said Nathan, “You can’t go out anywhere like this.”

And so Nathan headed out to the shops again accompanied by Maree and Liam, leaving Max to tend to Bella while giving her some time away from the other so called “children”. As they left, he nervously felt his back left hand pocket, feeling the thin wallet inside.
‘I wish there was such a thing as an alien bonus’ he thought, as he looked at Maree and Liam, ‘I can't leave them to fend for themselves, but how am I supposed to support a whole alien family?’ Sighing, he strapped Liam into a carseat, made sure Maree was buckled up, got in the car himself and drove off to the shops, feeling quite ill at the thought of what was going on.
