Chapter 22: Human
Max, Maree and Liam sat on the bottom holding devices at the table, wondering when Bella and Nathan would come out of the room. Liam was seated on Maree’s lap. As much as he was concerned about Bella, boredom had also set in for him because Bella and Nathan were taking so long. Liam played with his hands moving one across his face and then the other. He laughed and then got annoyed at himself for laughing because he should be only concerned. He frowned. Max spotted Liam frown.
“Don’t get annoyed at yourself Liam” said Max, “There may be something really terrible going on but as long as you realise something is going on unlike brainwashed people, there is nothing wrong with making the best of a bad situation. Entertain yourself for a while because I don’t think those two are coming out anytime soon.”
As soon as Max finished that sentence, the door to Bella’s room swung open and Nathan and Bella came out. Max, Maree and Liam looked in their direction. Nathan and Bella came to the table and sat down with them. Bella placed her right hand on top of the left. “Okay, Max, Maree, Liam there is something I have to tell you” she said, “I need to explain what was going on with the infant. Long story really short, the organisation impregnated me with the infant and they said if it comes during the mission they will take it away from me”.
“Those bastards” spat Max.
“Those what?” asked Bella.
“Bastards” said Max, “It’s a human insult I learned from other teenagers at school. It’s like saying they are a horrible or nasty person but much worse. And there are words worse than that still to describe something like the organisation. But they are not the real issue at the moment. This issue is you. How are you feeling Bella?”
“I’m okay” said Bella, “It’s sad but I managed to stop it so at least I may have a chance with the infant in another situation. It’s actually a very good thing I managed to stop it.”
There was silence for a moment then Liam lifted his arms up, reaching out to Bella. Bella grabbed Liam and he hugged her, snuggling into her things on her chest that Jack thought were tumours. Bella gently rubbed his head.
“Thank you Liam” she said, “You make a beautiful sweet infant.”
Liam hugged her more, hoping she was okay and feeling sad for what she had been through.
Jack sat at the table at the house he was originally living in with his family. Some more messages had come through the portal. It felt weird being back there. He had decided not to be one of the organisation’s devices and not to use their house or portal. He had to do this though. If he wanted to fight the evil, he had to fight it from within. He read the messages that had come through the portal.
One said, “We require information on the reproduction process of humans. We need you to find out how humans reproduce and then experience it so you can report back for our research.”
Another said, “We have not used the baby monitor for communication purposes for a long time. We will soon be testing this again so keep it handy.”
The final one said, “It appears the humans are more advanced than we thought. We saw an animated docu-hologram made on Earth that demonstrates their technology. Be aware of your surroundings and if you see any spiky blue haired humans I require you to capture them and then inform us that you have them.”
Jack read the messages and slowly took it all in. Bella had the baby monitor so she would be contacted. He hoped she would make up a reasonable excuse for him not being there to talk. He felt curious about reproduction but did not have a clue how it happens. As for capturing humans, Jack was not okay with that at all. When he first was put on this mission, it was presented to him as being a peaceful mission to determine if Earth was a place Banbazoidians could live. Capturing humans and letting the organisation do whatever they wanted to them does not fit into his view of peaceful. He was increasingly discovering just how un-peaceful the organisation was though. He still had to do what he had to do though. To buy time he would have to try to meet their wishes, at least the first two, but he was here for a more important purpose. Jack got a pen and paper and wrote down a message.
“Open up a portal to talk tonight” wrote Jack on the piece of paper and he sent it off through the portal back to Banbazoia.
‘I hope this works’ he thought, ‘we need to break this cycle’.
