Let's save America by learning lost history by playing classic card games. Continental - a great multipllayer GIN style card game

in #family6 years ago

Think about it 5 to 10 hours interacting with real people talking laughing learning teaching about anything under the sun as you play a game with others, Or sitting staring at an app on your cellphone ignoring the world. Which version of you will socialize better and make you more well rounded.

Continental - a great multipllayer GIN style card game has been played in the NYC card rooms between 1840s to at least 2000s.

Way before Chris money maker Won the World Series of poker playing Texas hold'em.

Turning Millennials and generation Xers into 2 Texas hold'em drones Not playing anything else with a deck of cards.

There was a vibrant Community Of card players Play all different sorts of cards. for money for hundreds of years
As for most parts of the world, when we played at home with friends & family.

Playing cards for big money for the most part, was an underground Endeavor In New York.
Unless you wanted to drive to Atlantic City Or go up to Foxwoods Or fly to Vegas or California to play in a card club.
You were essentially playing home games, Or In illegal card clubs. There were literally hundreds of small card clubs throughout The New York city Area.

The beauty of it was, you were just playing variations of poker. In fact no one played Texas hold'em. Poker Literally has Thousands of variations, Why would you play a game with you only get to look at 2 of your own cards, every hand? its actually a boring game!

Here's the other thing. They were non poker betting games with cards, much different then poker and requiring different skill sets. Being able to adapt different games Actually showed more card skills then being good at one game.

Back in the late 80s And early 90s, some friends and I used to play cards in the card rooms around all the boroughs of New York city, on Long Island and in in Westchester County. And we learned a game played by many Italians who were connected, a really good competitive game called Continental - NOT BE CONFUSED WITH "Continental Rummy". It really required thought out what you were doing and what your opponents were doing, To get ahead of them. It was a multiplayer rummy game using multiple decks with building pots and payouts along the way.

Why did people stop liking cards? For the most part the reality is they didn't!

Cards Were the most Flexible Game out there.

You could do just about anything with a little imagination:

  • keep track of a score
  • magic tricks
  • play a myriad of different games
  • randomly assign positions
  • run a contest
  • use as a calendar
  • explain a play by a sports team
  • layout a plan
  • use as throwing stars
  • tell a story.

Understand that prior to video games, The Most Crazy moving around game there was was pinball and they were fixed items that most people could not afford at home and would get bored with like a video game you figured out all the levels to.

And PCs and video game consoles with good graphics did not start to get wide spread use in the home until 90s.

So most people older than 45 didn't pick up Video games as children and play them as they got older. So most people pick up cards learned the games from their parents and friends. That's what they did instead in the days prior to video games. But their children had no desire to play. So oral history and family interaction is lost.

Now today Instead of they get the Madden or call to duty or other video game or app and sit staring at the screen playing alone. THEY DON'T LEARN A NEW CARD GAME which would have them playing with family, friends, and strangers. And they are losing that Fostering of camaraderie from the card games.

About 5 years ago I went to a private card room in Hobokin NJ. We played Texas Hold'em on one night. Ring game of Dealer call Poker Games on another night. And I was told they played gin rummy game called Skala, that they invited me to play after I talked about continental...some rules the same and some very different.

I come to find out that Skala is a version of gin rummy game played by In Sicilian Mobsters.
While Continental is New York Version of a gin game. And because there were Jewish And polish And Irish Mobsters in New York, and non-Sicilian mobsters, They refused To play Me Sicilian game. Essentially the idea Of the United States Melting pot Of culture had even come to the MOB.

People who took hits out on each other and stole find each other, could still come together to agree how to play cards with each other at a card game.

How bad does that make republicans look unable to reach across the aisle when they have a divided house to settle things like Dreamers, Health Care, Infrastructure Projects, funding the government, aid the Puerto Rico.

Opps I diverge....

I was talking the game up With my friends the other day And they were interested to play . So I go online I'm trying find instructions. And what are you now I find other game called continental But not the game played in New York . Some more running games And some were just completely different crazy stuff From back in the day . So What you gotta do.

Well I did something I didn't wanna do, I end up calling... ahhhhhh.... let's call him a former associate, I can't give you his name.

I just said said hello and asked how he was doing and cut to the chase, I asked to go over the details of the game because I wanted to print instructions on how to play the game on the Internet and play with my friends ,

He goes "Richie, anything for you in this case. You took too much money from me playing that game" and then actually asked if he could back me. I laughed and said: "This is gonna be fun ame With family and friends play little amounts of money . He replied "One thing only, I don't want to see My name or any of our friends on anything. But I know you already will not do that. So, I got no problems going over rules with you."

I'm keepimg the instructions for continental on my website so i can update them with variations and corrections. I already see one or two things that need variations written on them. And I want to not make it more accessible.

i think we've all gotten lazy. When the electricity went out with Hurricane Sandy. We din't have tv, internet & video games, so we played cards. It was the first time in long while that the whole family sat down and played a game
