When you hear the words cold calling what comes to mind?

• Canned speeches?
• Rejection?
• Leaving voice mail after voice mail?

Now, I know cold calling isn’t the best thing you can do with your time, but in certain cases cold calling is a necessary evil. What we will talk about today, is how to make cold calling as painless as possible. The best way to avoid cold calling is to simply, don’t do it!

Instead try these methods of getting clients first:

• Speak at local networking events
• Write a blog focused on your industry
• Host an event asking your current clients to bring someone who might be interested in your service in return for a referral.
• Speak at civic or non profit events

If you are unable to do those methods you can try this one as well.

• Send a clipping of newspaper article relating to your customer’s industry with your business card attached. This will get your customer thinking of you in terms of a resource as opposed to just another vendor.

One last option before you pick up the phone is:

Send a sales letter with a captivating introduction such as

“What would you do with 10 extra clients a month?”
“Learn how to increase your referral rate in three easy steps”
Grab your readers attention with a statement of value and your prospect are much more likely to read on.

Another benefit of sending a value packed letter before you call is, it gives your call much more power. The reason is because you are calling with a purpose as opposed to just calling to see how things are going.

Leaving the voice mail

Now you are bound to have to leave a voice mail at one time or another and there are ways to do that correctly as well.

• Tell them the specific reason you are calling
• Tell them what problems of theirs you will solve by meeting
• Give them an exact date and time frame you will be calling them back

Don’t forget the golden rule of cold calling. Ask for an appointment and nothing more! Never ever try to sell through the phone always, just ask for the appointment.

We all know that our time spent cold calling could be spent better, but it is a necessary evil of sales. By using these tips it will lesson your chances of rejection, and maybe you’ll even have some fun!
