INTEGRATING STEEM AS A LOCAL CURRENCY IN MY SMALLTOWN (MIDWESTERN US) ECONOMY

in #earthnation7 years ago (edited)

--I'm in the process of setting up a meeting with a local vendor in my small hometown fairly soon, in the lovely snow-covered Midwest, Smalltown, USA that I grew up. This person does business with enough local people in the area that if he began accepting steem payments in his place of business he would let the "cat out of the bag" in my little corner of the globe. I would guess that north of 80% of the people in a town of less than 7,000 people visit this person's business at least once a year, likely 20% of those people visit there once a month, with a solid staple of them visiting weekly or more.
--The conversation piece alone with a sign saying "Now accepting payments in STEEM," with a picture of the logo on the notice does admittedly send some shivers up and down my spine. This person employs people that work on gratuity (tips) and they employ around fourteen to sixteen employees including all part-timers. This guy is great to talk with how things are. He has a big mouth, but it that is not meant to have a negative connotation in the least bit. It's actually an invaluable part of the business, that is now over one hundred years old stretching over four generations in the same small town. This person does not keep secrets, and that is what so many of us like about them.
--My request to those that have talked to people about this platform, and the cryptocurrency Steem, would be any helpful inclusion of information or ways to make the explanation most simple and to the point. This person is not big on government intervention on small business at all which makes a major positive right away. He likes things simple, but is always up for a good idea that makes his business more competitively advantageous. They have actually been a part of multiple committees to set up local "dollar programs" similar to gift cards to the local chamber of commerce. I am probing you, my fellow steemians, who have had this visit with others, any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!

now, that's the way to get things rolling. i am considering paying some of my subcontractors in STEEM and getting them into the platform. i think they'll love it!

That is an AMAZING IDEA @altportal! Makes way too much sense. I think the time has come for those of us to use this as currency outside of steem and the crypto trade demonstrating an apparent practical use. When people realize this is a major step forward. In my case there is a lot of forces that make this a "downhill endeavor" due to the circumstances of that individual and in my opinion the character and willingness to try new things to make their business better. Very glad to hear from you, I would be really curious to hear the results of your use of steem as payment and how it goes. I may have to update my resume and inquiry if you have any job openings, lol.

This is certainly a great idea and an ideal setting for it. I'm in a large city and fear that the inroads would be harder to make. I have no expertise but one of the things I love about Steem that I would emphasize is that it is a currency that is reflective of the rapidly growing activities of the Steemit community where there is actual value being created and monetized on a daily basis. Best of luck and please share the results!

I am really glad to hear your thoughts on this @cwparkes and I think you are right on your comments. A casino chip has no value outside of a casino, I can't pay my water bill with them, but people seem to really covet them in the correct setting, that is for sure. I like the idea of getting the masses involved in grabbing the passive income that could come their way just in posting on steemit and stop getting data mined on other social media platforms. Good thoughts @cwparkes, glad to hear from you, feel free to ask questions or comment anytime I am always happy to have a good discussion like this anytime sir!

If you could get him to adopt Steem, that would be awesome! Hopefully he can look over the complexity of Steem and see its potential

I discovered your posts through #q-filter and they look like some good, original content. I would suggest that you work on formatting though. Here's some things I would change:

  • Don't capitilize every letter in your title. Just make first letter of each word uppercase. The current way looks kinda spammy.
  • Instead of the -- in front of paragraphs, try adding spaces so it doesn't look like one big text block. If you feel like you need something else you can use headers or a line divider (just type three or more astericks on a blank line)
  • Use the html code [Source](link to source here) below your pictures instead of pasting the full link.

Hope that helps 😉

Great stuff @carn I am very appreciative of the comments, I will have to do that. Lol, I became used to doing that on another online platform. Yeah that would be amazing, this guy is the kind of guy that would do it just to get the conversation out of people. q-filter hash tag on the search has become my favorite as of late too, the articles are impressive, so yeah I appreciate the heads up because I need to get my act together if I am going to keep using that hash tag. It would also be a plus to him as he would feel he started the trend in our hometown, which I couldn't care less if he were to get the credit for that because really he would've since I don't have a local business that does the customer volume he does, let alone being around as a locally family owned business for 100+ years. Thanks a lot for the chat @carn, I am really glad you stopped by!

As much is I like Steem it might be smarter to start with LitePay when it comes out on Feb 26.

Although, Steem does add a slightly more personal touch by making your user name the public key to your wallet. I've always thought it was a genius implementation.

Interesting, thanks for the comment @edicted, is LitePay a wallet or an ICO? The ICOs are really going to see the wrath of lawmakers across the world, in my opinion, but that's just my speculation of course take it for what it's worth. I like that Steem has a little bit of a track record to the public, but we both know how ideas can mushroom fast when they have a ton of merit. By the way, I am not at all slamming the release of all ICOs, its just that when one out of 10,000 is a scam, 10,000 times the coverage by massive media conglomerates is placed on the scam and the ignore the merit of the others. Thanks for the comment, feel free to shoot me back a comment if you have any counterpoints I try to take in as much info as I can, ESPECIALLY when it may be different than what I posted.

LitePay is Litecoin's new payment system. They are making it easy for vendors to accept payment and they will be issuing debit cards and stuff... it looks pretty awesome. As soon as they announced it was coming out on Feb 26 the price of Litecoin went from $160 to $230.

Ah yes, sorry brainfart, I heard about Palmpay a bit earlier, got them mixed up for some reason. I am reading a lot of really good stuff about how people are liking LitePay, now I can add you to the list.

Very good idea, I hope steem and steem dollar will be a currency in all the world, you can check by the way my post about this topic : Supporting steemit ecosystem ! , one of your followers recommanded to follow you and I am doing now, thanks for supporting this idea. ☺

Right on I absolutely agree, why not start in our own little corner of the world, one at a time, right? I actually have wanted our town to start its own alt-currency for the last several years due to public employees spending virtually all of their discretionary out of town. They made up a lot of people who were the highest paid working class in the area because of a long term economic depression in the immediate area. Then I found steem and the other cryptos fairly recently and thought, wow this saves me a lot of trouble these people already did the work for me!
