ArtSearch | Digital Art with @Mandelsage

in #curation7 years ago

At @TheNewAlchemists we feature the whole artist.

We want to get steem artists long-term followers, not just single upvotes (although those are nice too!). Find out more about our work in creative placemaking, our commitment to storytelling, and our belief that great art transcends language.

Every week our roster of curators will select artists, in any artistic category they wish to work in, to feature in the ArtSearch curation initiative.

We are working with a roster of 10 curators currently, and hope to build our roster to 14 regular curators within the next month. Submit your application here if you are interested in joining our growing community. And now...here we go!

ArtSearch | Digital Art with @mandelsage

Hi, I'm @mandelsage, an artist who uses fractals to create motifs and fine art.

I'm especially passionate about science, philosophy and critical thinking and I'm happiest if my art inspires others to get interested in learning more about our world. I feel strongly that our abilities of self-awareness and expression are like super-powers that we should all take full advantage of. The more we share with each other, the more we empathize with each other!

This week I focused on digital art of all kinds, and found 5 artists I am very happy to share with you today.

@debart

"Your dreams are my reality."

I could not post my first curation post on TNA without putting Daniel in it! Artist extraordinaire, itís like he took a mixture of Salvador DalÌ and Picasso and merged them with the digital age. And indeed he lists those two great artists as key influencers.

As it states on his website, Symbolism plays a big part of his creations and depictions, as Daniel believes that a deeper meaning exists within all objects. He truly has a way of capturing the pure essence of whatever concept he is trying to depict.

It actually puts in mind Plato's "Shadows" ... Plato thought of everything in the world as mere shadows of their true, perfect forms...

Daniel has a way of taking the shadows of the world and giving us a small glimpse into what their true forms might look like. He is also a big crypto fan and does a lot of cryptocurrency-inspired work.

@larrycalabrese

"Visual artist working on manifesting dreams into reality."

Larry is a self-taught artist from southern Florida who has recently gotten himself a Wacom tablet and has started experimenting with the digital side of art (something I hope he continues!).

He has a profile on fineartamerica.com ...: "[Larry] began painting around 2008 as a hobby which soon turned into an obsession. Over the years he has amassed an impressive collection of creations on canvas. Most of his work is completed with acrylic paints, but he has recently started to incorporate different mediums to broaden the dimensions he creates. Larry typically has an idea in mind when starting a new piece, but generally the canvas speaks to him dictating the path to follow. His use of vibrant colors and imagery captures the viewer's imagination and allows them to interpret the final image in their own way."

His digital "doodles", as he calls them, that he has recently done look promising to say the least. I'm looking forward to seeing in what direction he takes his art with this new-found mode of expression.

@elisea

Eclectic Visual Artist

I say "eclectic" because truly, Elise does everything! She writes stories, does a bit of photography and has painted a lot with guache.

Her speciality though, it seems (at least recently), is image manipulation using Gimp... Like me, she uses fractals in her work to create beautiful abstract art. She puts symmetry to good use and her colours are obviously well thought out, not randomly generated by the fractal program.

She's also constantly interacting with the art community by taking part in contests and resteeming other people's work.

I really enjoyed myself as I scrolled through her blog here on Steemit. Her art is so full of experimentation (which means she doesn't "rest on her laurels") and deserves more attention - please do go check out her blog and follow her.

@whornung

"Art made with digital tools."

Werner was an absolute treasure of a find! His work is immensely detailed and just gorgeous. He's relatively new to Steemit but has been working with digital tools to create art for a long time... And he and I are of the same mind about "digital art" in that so many people still don't appreciate it as "real" art. He quotes JD Jarvis:

"Viewing a digital work is like reading a poem or a film, because bringing forth the image into the material space represents not only the poem itself but the "performance" of a specific set of visualization tools. For a poem is nothing until it is read and a film is just a big round metal can until it is projected."

Not only does he create intricately designed works of splendour, but he also sometimes creates mesmerising moving art from his creations in the form of gifs. Check out this recent example.

Something else that caught my eye was his post entitled "Why fractals don't touch your soul." - and I can only agree with him. Creating art that connects with people's feelings using fractals is a real challenge that I face every day.

@sphericalart

"The geometric abstract art of Paul Petersen"

Paul's work is fascinating to me because at first I thought yay, another artist using fractals!, and actually, they are fractal, but he's not using a conventional fractal program.

All his work is done from the inside of a sphere! He manipulates the sphere in various ways and then captures what things look like from inside it! Quite the concept.

In Paul's own words from his website sphericalart.com:

"I'm a digital artist, who is fascinated by geometric patterns like those found in geodesic domes. I experiment with 3D models of spherical polyhedrons, and use their internal mathematical rhythms to create my artwork. I twist, pinch, and literally turn these spheres inside out to find and capture unexpected imagery with a variety of cameras."

Going through his site, you can find a lot of work he hasn't posted to Steemit yet. I hope he will begin to make use of Steemit more effectively soon by posting more about his process and interacting more on the platform =)

And those are the artists I have to share with you today!

Thank you for taking the time to read about these worthy artists - I appreciate your support of steem art. As a TNA curator, my goal is twofold: To find quality artists from around the steemosphere who are under-voted and/or just starting out, and also, to find artists that create work that inspire both your emotions and your mind. I recognise too that art comes in all forms and so, as much as possible, will not choose based only on my personal taste.

ArtSearch is an ongoing curation initiative working in any artistic medium and in any language. If you are interested, you may read our curation standards below:

(1) We will curate for quality first and foremost. We believe artists should take the time to create a well thought-out and formatted post to feature their work. It is good business practice, and the number one rule of self-marketing. We want to empower artists who are ready to invest in themselves as entrepreneurs.

(2) We believe "artist" is synonymous with "creativeî. We loosely define an artist as anyone working creatively and demonstrating a high level of artistry in their work in any sector!

(3) We believe in featuring the "whole artist" as opposed to a single post. We want to help artists get long-term followers, not single upvotes (although those are nice too).

(4) We believe art is a "practice. We will feature artists who show a commitment to growth and development (i.e. a new account that is continually/quickly getter stronger is more interesting to us than an "established" account that is not advancing).

(5) We believe art is tied to the world in which we live. We will prioritize showcasing artists whose work is a reflection of society, or a commentary on it (i.e. art with a message, purpose, or mission) and artists who are underrepresented in mainstream "art" sectors.

(6) We believe in sharing your story and/or your process. We are here to help artists thrive, which means helping to build a community of support for what you are doing. Sharing your story, and your process lets people into your world (and lets us know you're ready to do the extra work it takes to run a terrific blog/business).

(7) We believe art transcends language. If a post is well-written, well-formatted, and features inspiring art we will curate it regardless of whether it is in English.

Thanks again for stopping by, we appreciate you being here!
