ConsenSys, a company based in New York, USA, whose main activities are in the building of decentralised application for the blockchain technology has chosen Mauritius to build an Ethereum Island.

Mauritius Island

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, nearest to Madagascar as can be seen in the map below. Mauritius has a surface area of around 2000 km2 (a bit bigger than London) and is mostly known for its beaches and sunny weather, thereby the name paradise island.

Mauritius, being bilingual (English and French) is mostly known to investors for transferring funds to India and Africa as a whole. We are one of the most advanced developing country in the African region and this makes us a great ground to stand for investing around the world, due to our ability to communicate in 2 of the most used languages.

Ethereum Island

James Duchenne, Managing Partner at Sutton Stone, a venture-building firm saw Mauritius as a great location to building an Ethereum Island. He sees Mauritius as a 'Silicon corridor' according to his interview with Business Magazine whereby the island will be used as a way to migrate knowledge and skills from Silicon Valley to a new innovation center on the island.

Why Ethereum? According to ConsenSys, Ethereum smart contracts are more nimble and agile as compared to Bitcoin applications. ConsenSys is enabling new services and business that can be built using blockchain technology which will be using Mauritius as a test case. They proposed to establish the basics of a blockchain ecosystem with digital identities and registration, a process of verification, and decentralization of information. From there they plan to form a group of developers, regulators, and entrepreneurs to keep the system going by creating applications and organizations using blockchain technology.

Since Mauritius already has a well established communications, information technology and finance with some of the best infrastructure and education system in the region, which will create new job opportunities and new ventures for investors.

Last year the government of Mauritius complete its project of providing free WIFI to the whole island which will facilitate the use of blockchain technology. Here is the map of the island with the number of free Wifi hotspots in each of the 9 districts.

All in all, Mauritius is well on its way to becoming an Ethereum Island, the best name to come after being tagged Paradise island.
