Fractal Writing Contest #3 - winners get to keep their souls! (and a few SBDs); Results of Contest #2

in #contest6 years ago (edited)

The SECOND Fractal Writing Contest is over. There were nine contestants, three times more than the previous contest! Most entries were themed after an alien invasion, but one of them involved references to magic used by other space races, a subject that is very interesting to me.

So, the winner for week #2 is: @katamori for this abstract.

The contest post expired with a reward of 3.703 SBD, so @katamori gets half of that (rounded up): 2.000 SBD. I decided to split the rest of the SBD reward to two other entries that I liked a lot, they both get 0.850 SBD.

Congratulations to all of them! Also a big thank you to all participants and upvoters. If there are enough SBDs made by the contest post, I will try to reward a 2nd- and 3rd- place winner, as well.

This week, the third installment of the Fractal Writing Contest will run.

The Contest

Each post in this contest series will contain a fractal, a 2-dimensional representation of a complex mathematical formula. The participants have to post a comment with something inspired by the fractal, be it just a title, a haiku, a story, whatever.

Rules

  • You have to reply with a comment in the contest post.
  • The reply must be inspired by the fractal, but no explanation needed.
  • Any kind of content is acceptable: just a title, a haiku, a poem, a short story, a painting, a photo, a video, a doodle, whatever. The content must be yours, no links to other people's work accepted.
  • I will pick the best reply, when the post expires (1 week after posting it).
  • The winner gets half the SBD made in the post, minimum 1 SBD. If there are enough SBDs made by the contest post, I will try to reward a 2nd- and 3rd- place winner, as well.
  • Upvotes and resteems are welcomed, but not necessary to participate.

Mother.

Your delicate limbs maneuver the world while I ride on your back with my brothers and sisters. You urge us off one by one into willing hosts. Minds changed to want us, to need us. Bring us home to your families while we devour your insides. Mother. Because of you one day I will be a mother too.

Wow, that is .. spooky, at least. And to think that even an evil parasite or doppleganger has a mother, and shows feelings of affection to her is so... original! Thank you, a great entry.

Thank you so much! These challenges are a lot of fun!

Scritch-Scratch

It's all right, everything is all right. We're just going to confuse Him that's all, keep going, that's right, keep the lines straight, Scritch-Scratch.

Straight line means everything's fine,
Straight line means everything's fine.

Scritch-Scratch

Why WHY can't I keep them straight, and too dark. He'll get out if I make them too dark.

Any wall will do, that's all right, Scritch-Scratch, keep going, mustn't stop, no curves or He'll see me. Keep em straight, straight god damn you STRAIGHT! I AM NOT GOING BACK TO THE SCRATCHING PLACE I WONT

Scritch-Scratch

Yeah, this is straight out of a Lovecraft book, the protagonist driven to hallucinating madness by meddling with things man was not meant to meddle with! I guess you are familiar with Frank Belknap Long's story The Hounds of Tindalos, where the demonic creatures were materializing through the angles in a room and the protagonist, in a paranoid rage, had to obliterate all angles and make the room like a sphere!?

Yes! such a great story, and definitely an inspiration for this story here! Also another story I read once involving painting a room completely white so that an evil pattern couldn't find her...

Looking forward to the next contest!

The scientist scratched his head. It has been known and shown for several days at that point, unbeknownst to the public, but it defied all sorts of probable or plausible laws of physics.

"Dr. Anderson?", his assistant called him, while bringing additional papers regarding the research.

He was worried. He knew the scientist won't turn away easily from the result, yet he felt the urge to move on and find out, how to handle the situation.

"I'm not able to comprehend", the scientist replied. ", whether are we his appendage, or he appeared suddenly. I demand to know the outcome of the upcoming collision."

"Dr. Anderson, the Council voted on putting all our efforts to prevent said collision-"

"HOW?", he shouted, turning towards his assistant. "Even the magnetic field of the entire planet cannot disrupt that field!"

"But the Council-"

"I don't give a damn about the Council! They have no idea what are they playing with!"

Anderson then sighed and turned back. Sweat drops of nerve rolled through his forehead.

"Communication is the only solution I'm capable of thinking about right now. It has to accept its fate. So do we."

And in that very moment, the magnetic scanner image produced a small disruption, about 200 000 km from Earth, shaped like a tear drop, travelling through the already anomalous waves, before dissipating in the edge.

(my first impressions again, spoiler: looks like a giant entity made of magnetic fields, next to Earth)

That's really creative @katamori, very inspiring story! It reminds me of a great Grant Morrison comic, named... well, "Nameless"!

Thanks! I love writing and learnt a lot about tropes and plot design, but sadly I lack the capacity to have writings in length that I want to. I'm too impulsive of a person and hate massive editing later on.

One day I'd like to have an own comics series anyway.

A lot of people started their comics here on steemit, like @drwatson and @la-fumettista. There are many supporters as well, @bryan-imhoff (also a good writer). So, check them out, find your own and see how it works out.
There is also a new fractal contest going on, if you'd like to participate

Ah, thanks for mentioning those names! I'm not too deeply into comics yet, I'm aiming to read "Making comics" by Scott McCloud, because even remotely checking, it seems like a phenomenal source in the matter.

I'm also aware of your newer contests but I was unable to participate. There were tough times for me in the recent weeks which blocked all my creative endeavours.

But if you'd be interested by any chance, I have this. This is what I'd like to "comicify" if you will.

Steemit has been a great place for me to get started with comics!

In cell block D sits convict 981463.
His last meal fed and last testament read.
He is lead to a chair of certain doom not far in a concrete room.

The deed now done, creating a quieted mind. The eyes of the body now blind.
Revealing a figure of tormented kind entangled in a quantum run.

Thanks @ronism, another great entry by a regular participant! The tortured mind of someone that knows he is going to die, finding peace in his last moments... perhaps a moment of transcendence.

Twist

After several years of searching
The desire only became burning
With the twist and turns flirting
They didn't know she was hurting

It felt like she was chased by some gods
Knowing not the odds
She shows approval with a nod
Not knowing it was a fraud

At the end of the day
When everyone had gone their way
She stood by the bay
Not knowing she would be slayed....

Wow, great poem, dark and depressing -- I think it fits the image perfectly.

Wow, thanks much....

I'm glad it does

You are the 2nd winner of this contest! Check out the new one here

Oh wow!
Thanks, I'm glad I won

The Minipian Geishas was a rare breed among the stars. They all mastered the Nebula-ukulele, and their lovemaking was surrounded with mythic awe in all the larger sytems. But the most peculiar and famous speciality was their treatment of hair!

It is said that the 2013th Concubine Queen once ordered a haircut that was so ambitious and fantastic that it took her Minipian Gaisha-slaves more than a star turn to complete it. When they finally finished the work the hair made an enormous spiderlike construction that was to be a site of worship for many years to come. But the Concubine Queen herself had vanished in the process and none of the Geisha hairdressers remembered when they had last seen her.

I can't imagine what would happen if she had a bad-hairday!

this was great hearing about this type of contest my entry will be done
this was good contribution for steemit users thankyou
