Thursday Colourful Photography: Hand-made wooden toys, ของเล่นทำจากไม้แกะสลักทาสีสดใส

This is my entry for the colourfulphotography contests hosted by @juliank.

There are two shops at Amarin Plaza that specialize in wood work of all kinds. I like their wooden animal carvings either in natural wood colour or brightly painted. In the old days, Thai people were very good carvers as they had to make their own toys, kitchen utensils, and they even carved a boat out of a big tree trunk. In the north of Thailand where they used to keep elephants for logging and transportation, we will find lots of elephant wooden carvings of all sizes, in some provinces horse carvings would be more popular as they used to have horse drawn carriages. Nowadays, the younger generations have not learned their families’ skills of the past as they would have high level of education and become office employees in air-conditioned offices.

I am very fond of wood furniture, carvings, toys, kitchen utensils, wooden paintings which are very heavy for putting on the wall and wooden Buddha statues. I found several pieces of these by chance at the annual exhibition of wood furniture and wood works in Nongkhai. The feeling of wood is very soft, warm and reassuring, its beauty is timeless and it helps me feel more grounded in nature vibration. Nowadays it is very difficult to find this level of high quality work at a reasonable price. The good and experience carvers are getting old and passing away. The same is happening in the silverware industry in Thailand, so I try to collect old designs of silver jewelry whenever I could. The old knowledge of making silver jewelry by hands is also disappearing. Machine tools have become more widely used in both gold and silver jewelry design for precision and standardized work. But, for me hand-made jewelries have classic charm and they are unique.

ที่ชั้นสามของอมรินทร์พลาซ่า มีร้านขายงานไม้หลายอย่างอยู่สองร้าน ร้านนี้มีงานไม้แกะสลักเกือบทุกแบบให้เลือก มีทั้งของเล่น ของแต่งบ้าน ของใช้ในครัว สมัยก่อนคนไทยโบราณแกะสลักไม้เก่งมากเพราะ ต้องทำของเล่นของใช้ในบ้านเอง บางคนมีความสามารถในการขุดเรือจากท่อนไม้เลยทีเดียว ถ้าไปทางเหนือเรา จะพบช้างไม้แกะสลัก+ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงวิถีชีวิตของการทำป่าไม้และการลากซุง ตลอดจนการขนส่งสินค้าด้วยช้าง ในบางจังหวัดเราจะพบการแกะสลักม้าไม้เพราะที่นั่นเคยมีรถม้าและเลี้ยงม้าเป็นวิถีชีวิต แต่ปัจจุบันนี้ทักษะในการแกะสลักกำลังจะหายไปจากหมู่บ้านต่างๆ คนรุ่นหลังมีการศึกษาค่อนข้างสูง และมักไปทำงานเป็นพนักงานตามบริษัท และอยู่ในห้องทำงานที่มีแอร์ให้ความเย็นสบาย

เราชอบงานไม้มาก ตั้งแต่เครื่องใช้ในบ้าน เฟอร์นิเจอร์ ของเล่น พระพุทธรูป และมีโอกาสได้สะสมงานไม้ดีๆหลายชิ้นที่งาน แสดงสินค้าประจำปีที่หนองคาย สมัยนี้จะหางานไม้ฝีมือดีในราคาที่เหมาะสมเป็นเรื่องที่ยากมาก คนรุ่นเก่าที่มีฝีมือก็เริ่มแก่ลงไปและตายจากกันไป ต่อไปความรู้และภูมิปัญญาพื้นถิ่นจะหายไปหมด ซึ่งสานนี้ก็กำลังเกิดขึ้นกับวงการออกแบบและทำเครื่องเงินเครื่องทองลวดสายโบราณที่ประณีตและวิจิตรมากๆ มีการใช้เครื่องจักรในการออกแบบและขึ้นรูปเครื่องประดับทองและเงินมากขึ้น เพราะช่วยลดค่าแรงและทำให้ชิ้นงานเป็นตามมาตราฐานเดียวกัน แต่เราชอบงาททำด้วยฝีมือเพราะมีเสน่ห์และมีเอกลักษณ์เป็นของตนเอง
