Loy Krathong means “to float (loy) lotus-shaped vessels ususally made from banana leaves (krathongs). Before floating these krathongs or vessels, we would put a few flowers, three joss-sticks, one or two candles into the vessels and make a wish. This popular festival takes place each year on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which is usually in early November. This year, Loy Krathong festival did take place on Friday 3rd November. Nowadays, krathongs could be made of colourful paper, bread, or other materials that can be made into round shaped vessels which can float on water.

This tradition was established during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng in the Sukhothai period; a lady in the Royal Court called Nang Nophamas started the ceremony by making banana leaves krathongs to pay respect to the Goddess of the River and to float away all the bad luck. So, Thai people like to participate in Loy Krathong festival to float away their bad luck and to welcome the coming New Year with new blessings from the Goddess of the River.

In the countryside, people have the artistic acumen in making their own krathongs for floating on the river. In Bangkok, we’ll have to buy the ready-made krathongs along the vending stalls near the river banks. My gardener, Pann, did manage to make two krathongs from all the flowers and banana leaves from the garden. The whole town was throbbing with traffic jams along the river bank as people didn’t celebrate this festival last year. So, she didn’t want to go to town center for the occasion, but quietly loy krathong at the local river bank. The moon was spectacularly bright and very beautiful on that night.
