Workout No. 012 ~~ JAN/19

Base Fitness Phase – Week 2

Day 12.jpg

I don't actually watch Spongebob -- so I can't really think of a funny joke

But that's okay!

It's Day 12 everyone!!! And it's...

FRIIIIIDAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!

We made it! And we even managed to not drink a bunch of beer tonight! Arguably, this is one of the things I struggle with as far as my training goes. I'm a big fan of celebrating weekends. But if we wanna get lean and strong, we've gotta lay off the wobbly pops.

I'm just sitting here with @caitycat, @somebuttstuff, a whole bunch of dogs, and a bowl of curry. And I'm pleased as punch about it. I spend a fair amount of time writing these posts, but I usually do it while watching a movie or eating some food, and I enjoy reflecting on my day.

Today was our 3rd Outdoor Mileage day -- which generally just means we were doing some lead climbing in the gym today! These days are substantially more fun than ARC days. I like getting on lead -- IT GETS THE PEOPLE GOING.

Look at all those beautiful green checkmarks up there. We're on a pretty serious hot-streak over here. We're kickin' ass and takin' names. We're slapping those holds like they owe us some goddamn money, and we're squeezing them so hard we're leaving dents.

Crimpin' ain't easy, but it's necessary.

Got out for an evening climb with @somebuttstuff a couple hours ago here. Colour me surprised, but the climbing gym was pretty quiet on a Friday night! I thought all the cool kids would have been there, doing hip things, and wearing trendy clothes. Turns out people have these things called "social lives" and "other hobbies". PISH POSH, I say. RE-EVALUATE YOUR DECISIONS, old-bean.

Lets get into it.

The Workout:

The Plan (The Good):
  • Outdoor Mileage -- 8 Pitches
  • Climb well below your onsight level;
    • Pay attention to endurance and arm pump.
Objective Review (The Bad):
  • 5 Pitches of lead climbing:
    • 2x 5.10a;
    • 2x 5.10b;
    • 1x 5.10c.
  • 2 Pitches of harder (5.11b/c) on toprope.
Subjective Review (The Ugly):

Oh man. The lead climbing was so much fun. The first 10a climbs went really smoothly and felt like a great warmup. The 10b climbs were actually really fun routes -- the first one was kind of powerful and reachy, and the 2nd one was situated around an arete and had some really tricky clipping positions. The 10c route at the end was actually a little bit tricky -- there was a bit in the middle where it started to get over-hung that was very sequencey, and required you to do the correct moves in order to get through (unless you were gonna make it REALLY hard on yourself).

Hands are starting to get a little sore though.

... and Lefty

i'm feeling pretty confident on lead right now though, and I'm starting to think that I'm ready to start trying out a couple harder routes up there. It always makes it so much harder though -- knowing that you might take a whip if you can't make it through a tough sequence. It's going to be as much of a mental battle as a physical one. Looking forward to getting out to do a recon mission at one of local-ish crags up-island in Nanaimo BC!

Today, In my space that I reserve down here for cool climbing stuff -- I'm gonna share another old climbing memory. This is a timelapse I shot at one of the local crags in Kelowna BC. Specifically -- Lonely Girl Crag, at Johns Family Park along Chute Lake Rd.

We had a lot of fun that day, and the weather was actually great and not too hot -- so I don't mind that there wasn't too much cloud action.

Be well, stay safe, and I'll see you on the sharp side (once it dries out around here).

Previous CRUSHENING posts:

The Pitch (This is me talking about how I'm going to spend rewards -- if you're only here for climbing, you can skip this)

After my first few posts, I spent some time thinking about how I can make this space a little sexier. And two things came to mind that could really enable some cool looks at some cool places:

  • A drone;
  • A van.

I've picked out a nice cheap drone that I think should be a solid introduction to what I'm doing. Check thing out -- the Yuneeq Breeze 4k. It seems to shoot pretty high quality video, and it's way cheaper than most of the other ones. Does anyone have experience with this thing? I'd like to know.

My plan with these posts (aside from keeping a journal, generating motivation and the occasional giggle, and sharing some great climbing content when the good weather gets here) is to fund climbing gadgets (drone) and adventures (van). These will directly enable me to capture more interesting perspectives and get further into these climbing parks and be able to share more about each area.

If you've made it this far down the post, then I give you mad props. Be advised, on one of the @dtube posts I made earier, I ended up getting a pretty juice upvote out of it. It is my intention to use this money as a launch pad to, in some way, shape or form, promote these posts (please tell me what is and isn't acceptable -- please let me know if something is frowned upon).

When this post becomes roughly 24hrs old, I will use a portion of the liquid funds I have available and purchase some upvotes for this post:

  • I will leave all SP rewards powered up in my account;
  • I don't usually get much of a profit from this in terms of liquid rewards (though it can, and does, happen) -- and you can sometimes get less back than you put in. I will try to choose wisely.
  • Get your upvotes in before that, and enjoy whatever curator rewards you can get! I wont do any promotion or resteeming of my own before this -- I'm trying to make this a bonus, as small as it may be, for my followers.

Please upvote and resteem generously. There's some amazing places on the island that I would like to share. I try to respond to all questions and comments that I get, so make some noise! If you have any questions about some of the climbing jargon / lingo I used, just ask, and I'll break it down. I might even make it a feature in my next post, in which case I'll give you some credit, and maybe even some kind of reward... unknown at this time.

Duuuuuude!
I've been in weird interstate limbo for a week and before that I was well and truly down the curie rabbithole... so I hadn't actually read one of these posts properly before now.... and goddamn that was a massive error of judgement. .. these are so good!!

I want a drone!!
I haven't researched them at all, but I really want one for all the forests and mountains over here.

There is a crypto company that might pay you to own a drone for hire... I'll try and dig up deets tomoz.

Thanks for wording us up on the vote sitch, except I stuffed up and voted way too early... and I'm running low on VP as usual.

Next time I'm gonna smash a proper timed vote so hard!

Also, I assume you're checking the votebot status to make sure you're getting a decent ROI? I've given up on them cos I just couldn't find a time where dudes weren't slamming large sums down in the last couple of minutes and ruining it for everyone. @qurator seems pretty good though.

Ahh, as for actual climbing.... I'd love to try lead, but man, that exercise where you have to jump backwards so your belay cam practise... so hardcore.

Thanks dude I appreciate the nice words! I've definitely been keeping an eye on which bots were going to make me a buck or so, or at least not lose a ton. A couple of them have been pretty decent with the dip in the crypto markets, I feel like people may have been taking a short break.

Definitely tightening up again now though, so we'll see if any can be positive. On that note, I'm not 100% certain how cool everyone is with the use of these bid bots. I'm trying to use them in a way that it's transparent and a potential bonus to curators, in an attempt to build a bit of following. Let me know if I do something that's not cool, okay?

The crypto drone thing sounds crazy! Excited to hear more about it.

Also : lead climbing is such a rush compared to toprope. Gets a nice little adrenaline rush going. There's a couple things to learn, but it's pretty simple

How do you manage to be active so often, i'm jealous! My body would break down after 4 days.
For me it's finger-strenght day since i'm going to a gym that is a real crimperfest. Love it :-D

Haha thanks man! It's nice right now because that's are the aerobic exercise breaks, which give my hands and arms a bit of a rest. Definitely starting to feel it though. Haha.

Planning on going for a drive today and scoping out some goal routes, so I doubt I'll have time to get a climb in, so that should help too.

Those crimp days are so tough. I'm always envious of people that can hold on to credit card thin holds and make it look easy. It's all about consistency and developing a base fitness. If you get lots of volume in, your body adjust pretty quickly as long as you're careful to not overdo it.

Thanks for the nice words!

This is such a ambitious training schedule...
Probably I should make a calender like that as well, to finally really push into the 5.12s^^

Do it! It's kind of tedious to go to the gym every day, but I feel so good right now. Love getting strong and feeling progress.

Sounds like you have a good goal in mind! The plan I'm following is all about incremental progress, and I can verify that, if done consistently, it works. Helped me get to point where I could lead my first 5.11a and 11b routes. I'm sure it'll help you get into the 12s. I think as a sub goal, I'd be pretty excited if I could start climbing 12s regularly in the gym on toprope with the rest of the regular crushers that go there. Finally be one of "the strong ones".

Thanks for stopping by, dude!
