FACE TO FACE WITH GOD

in #christianity6 years ago

Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Genesis 32:24

So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Genesis 32:30

Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. So Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.” Judges 6:22

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD

Whenever someone received a visit from “the angel of the LORD,” this was in fact the pre-incarnate Christ. The visible appearances of God in human or angelic form in the Old Testament, is actually the Son of God manifesting Himself prior to His incarnation.

Jacob and Gideon had seen the pre-incarnate Jesus face to face.

The LORD (Yehovah) would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. Exodus 33:11

The LORD (Yehovah) would speak to Moses face to face.

And the LORD said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." Exodus 33:19-20

THE FACE OF GOD

Although these passages concerning Moses seeing the face of the LORD may seem to contradict one another, “The face of God” may mean here God's real and true self. The inference being that no-one can look on God as he is in his total purity and majesty.

The Dictionary of Bible Themes defines the expression, “The face of God” as a term used to refer to the character of God, especially his favor towards his people. For God to turn his face to his people is to offer them his grace and help; for God to turn his face against his people is to withhold his favor and blessing. To seek the face of God is to seek his favor.

THE FACE OF JESUS

The gospel writers frequently mention the face of Jesus Christ.

On the Mount of Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John saw how "his face did shine as the sun" (Matthew 17:2), as He spoke of His forthcoming death. Shortly after this, "he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem" (Luke 9:51) to meet His death.

A few days after His entrance into Jerusalem, He was delivered into the hands of wicked men who took delight in desecrating that face which, in loving grief, had just wept over the city and its indifference to God. But first, in the garden just before His arrest, He "fell on his face" in agonizing prayer (Matthew 26:39).

Then the Roman soldiers began "to cover his face" [they blindfolded Jesus] (Mark 14:65), and to "spit in his face" (Matthew 26:67), and finally, "they struck him on the face" (Luke 22:64). In fact, they abused Him so severely that "his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men" (Isaiah 52:14). The New Living Translation reads, “His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human.”

WHEN HE COMES AGAIN

But when He comes again, the Christ-rejecting world will cry out to the mountains to "fall on us, and hide us from the face . . . of the Lamb . . . from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away" (Revelation 6:16; 20:11). All the redeemed, on the other hand, will rejoice forever in "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6).

and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. Revelation 1:13-16

No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Revelation 22:3-4

This is the last reference in the Bible to the face of the Lord Jesus Christ, and a glorious promise it is, with its assurance we His servants will finally see Him face to face!

As a Jewish believer in Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God, I have an understanding of the Hebrew culture, mindset, and the context in which the Scriptures were given. I have posted a series called, "Revealing the Mysteries of the Bible" that I hope will bless you.

What a day that will be to look forward too. I really can't wait.

No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Revelation 22:3-4

God bless!

I agree entirely that Christ was in his pre-incarnate state throughout the old testament however I would give the view that the angels of the LORD were angels and that pre-incarnate Christ is the 'LORD' of the old testament, distinct entities. As I understand it three angels came to Abraham in Gen 18, and after they had left Gen 18:22 states 'Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the LORD.' As I read it I get the impression Christ is the LORD of the old testament and that the angels of the LORD are his host. I've always been fascinated with the passage with Jacob and just wondered if there's anything in the original Hebrew alluding to the fact that men back then were physically stronger than us?
I also love the book of revelation, Rev 21:23 'And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.' I can't wait 😊 God bless.

The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. Genesis 12:1

Abram who later had his named changed to Abraham, had a unique relationship with the LORD. He was in a personal covenant with Yehovah. He served a meal to three "men" who were later identified as the two angels who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the LORD. He knew the voice and face of the LORD.

The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? Judges 2:1-2

It was "I AM" who sent Moses to confront Pharaoh but according to Judges 2:1, it was the angel of the LORD who brought the sons of Israel up our of Egypt. He is no mere angel but the pre-incarnate Christ.

Old Testament theophanies that involved the manifestation of God in human form were appearances of the second person of the Trinity, and as such their purpose was not only to provide immediate revelation but also to prepare mankind for the incarnation of Christ. We see the Divine Logos (The Word was God) in Genesis 1 and 2 in the Creation of the world, in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2 and 3, at the oaks of Mamre with Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18, in the Burning Bush before Moses in Exodus 3, in the Cloud and Pillar of Fire before the children of Israel in Exodus 13, as the Rock which followed the Israelites in Romans 10, as the Finger of God giving the Law in Exodus 19 and 20, as the King of Glory in Isaiah 6, and as the Angel of the Lord throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, just looking at a few examples of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament!

Ahh yes, I see now... Judges 2:1-2 alone is evidence enough. Truly is amazing to think Abraham was able to spend an evening with Christ in his true form as well as two of his angels. Thankyou for taking the time to clear this up for me, I am thankful for this teaching. Peace be with you.

Dear @galacticvagabond,

You are very welcome.
