WHAT DO “HALLELUJAH,” “SHALOM,” AND “AMEN” REALLY MEAN?

in #christianity6 years ago

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Revelation 19:5-7

The word Hallelujah is found at the beginning of 10 of the Psalms and in chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation. Hallel in Hebrew means joyous praise. The term Tetragrammaton (meaning a word having four letters) refers to the Hebrew name of the God of Israel – YHVH (Yehovah). Hallelujah is an exclamatory expression of praise and adoration of Yah.

Hallelujah and the Latin form Alleluia are transliterations of the Hebrew word הַלְּלוּיָהּ meaning:

"Praise (הַלְּלוּ) [from the first two letters of the Tetragrammaton יהוה] - Yah (יָהּ)". Praise the LORD (Yehovah).

שָׁלוֹם Shalom is often translated as “peace,” but means much more than an absence of conflict. Shalom means completeness – nothing broken and nothing missing. It encompasses soundness (in body), well being, health, prosperity, quiet, tranquility, contentment, peace and friendship.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

The Hebrew word Amen is derived from the root [aman], which means to be firm or solid in the sense of permanency. Thus by implication, it means to be sure, true or faithful. So whenever we see this word Amen used in scripture, it is affirming truth, or illustrating something is said that is of absolute certainty.

Amen is derived from the Hebrew word emuna or "faith" with the same linguistic root, implying that one is affirming with faith in God’s Word found in the Bible. The word Amen is an acronym for אל (’El) מלך (melek) נאמן (ne’eman), meaning "God, King [who is] Trustworthy.“

"And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; these things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;" Revelation 3:14
