Porsche launched in 1972 the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (named after the Carrera Panamericana race, and RS stand for Renn Sport (Racing in German), with a bigger and lighter engine. In a first time, it was produced 500 examples to obtain the homologation for the competition, but it was a huge success, so the production was extended to 1,590. It remains the sport car par excellence.
