1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider by Pinin Farina
I forgot when I presented the RM Sotheby's Villa Erba Sale (this weekend in Como, Italy) this legendary car, 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider. With a coachwork by Pinin Farina, this will be the star of the auction with a price of more $US 5,000,000.
History of the Ferrari 500 Mondial
The Ferrari 500 Mondial was the Ferrari sports racer for the years 1954 and 1955. In 1954, Alberto Ascari won the Championship and the car its nicknamed Mondial. Only 13 Pinin Farina coachwork were produced including 5 with covered headlight.
This model was owned by Antonio Tony Parravano who made fortune in the frozen food industry (he had 13 Maserati and 11 Ferrari) and was construction magnate in California. He established Scuderia Parravano to engage the best American drivers including Carroll Shelby, Phil Hill for Californian races (Willow Springs in February 1955, Palm Springs in March 1955...). But Parravano had somes issues with the I.R.S in 1957 and disappeared in 1960 in order to skip bail. Nobody heard about him since... I like this story...
Specification
The Ferrari 500 Mondial has 2.0 liter Lampredi I4 engine producing 170 hp but with a weight of only 720 kg.
This model was recently restored by Ferrari Classiche. Expensive and beautiful...

That's a wicked looking car, we both did a 500 today! It sort of looks like a smiling frog from the front, cheers mate.
Now that you said smiling frog, I only see that :-)
