1965 ASA 1000 GT Coupé

Still during its Villa Erba Sale in May, this rare 1965 ASA 1000 GT Coupé will head to auction through RM Sotheby's. With a coachwork by Gruppo Bertone, this is one of the only 90 Ferrarina produced.

A discovery for me, I didn't know about this model and manufacturer... always great to learn new stuff about cars of the 60's.

History of the ASA 1000 GT

The ASA 1000 GT was an idea of Ferrari that wanted to develop a small and cheaper sports car with the Tipo 141 engine. Giotto Bizzarrini, Ferrari's automobile engineer, conceived the chassis while Giorgetto Giugiaro from Bertone designed the coachwork (one of the first examples of his automotive design). But, Enzo Ferrari didn't want to produce this car.

So in 1962, ASA (Autocostruzioni Società per Azioni) was founded in order to built this model Mille GT aka Ferrarina (Little Ferrari). The ASA 1000 GT was presented during the 1963 Geneva Auto Show. ASA built different models, coupé (about 90 examples), convertible (even less) and a competition versions. Five years later, the company closed its doors due to disappointing sales, customers prefer to buy Ferrari.

Specification

With its 1,032 cc Tipo 141 I4 engine, the ASA 1000 GT Coupé produces 100 hp at 6,500 rpm. The car was restored in Swiss in 2008. Beautiful Little Ferrari...
