We Are All Capitalists

in #capitalism7 years ago

Capitalism is defined as the economic system or ideology that is primarily based on private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit.

The definition is rather straightforward across all dictionaries. What has become rather problematic is the perception of the meaning of the word. Definitions change based on cultural narratives and this can lead to much misunderstanding.

The first and foremost means of production is the individual himself. Without the individual, nothing happens. When many individuals come together and produce something then we are still within the realm of capitalism since everyone wants to make profit at the end of the day. We take one substance and turn it into another in order to exchange it. Nothing is or can ever be valued the same.

The creation of profit is rather inevitable based on the laws of nature. If everything was valued the same, everything will be valued to zero.

Take for example a bucket of water. In times of drought, that bucket can be very expensive for someone that is thirsty. In a rainy place like Ireland, that bucket is probably worthless. The planet is governed by different climates, cultures, ecosystems and temperaments that make each unique transaction profitable. A bucket here is not the same as a bucket over there.

This different perception in value is what creates capitalism. Even is by some magical means we were able at the very end of each day to balance all values down to the same price, everything will be worthless. There would be no need to produce a table if an apple is worth the same. Eventually the system will collapse — and this is what exactly happened with all socialist systems. They failed because they were more inefficient compared to capitalism.

It is my firm belief that natural law provides the constituents for capitalism for flourish. Every single species arounds us fights in order to survive. Groups band together in order to take over on other groups. Those who survive go on to make even more adaptive individuals. This goes on and on. Survival is the only game in town.

When we want to have our own kids then we are expressing capitalistic tendencies. We value our own genes more than we value others because this is how nature dictates our physiology from the time we are born. We desire a specific brand over another because we value one over the other. We like 'Book A' instead of 'Book B' because the one is superior from the other. There is no other way for humanity to exist.

Nonetheless, this allegory of the concept of capitalism brings a sense of unfairness to most people. The reason is rather simple. Nature doesn't care about all of us. It creates a lot of variations so some will go on, not all. The selection is random. This is how we get mental disorders, genetic diseases or geniuses. Only a very few matter due to the way natural selection works. The rest are rather worthless combinations, failed experiments based on the given environmental parameters that were introduced.

Ironically, the very crowd that is awry about capitalism is the one that defines it. Whether it is famous pop-star, a brand of cigarettes or a booming shitcoin the crowd never wants all things to be equal. Individuals want to distinguish themselves through profit. We are defined by value, by own capital. Whether that capital is intellectual, social or financial is rather irrelevant.

I’ve been learning about capitalism and the founfing fathers in my sociology class this week . I’ll bring this up on Monday , totally blew my mind :D

You will get your professors really angry since most of them are socialists

Exactly. I've tried to explain to communists that all economics systems are "capitalist"; the only difference is whether it's laissez-faire or monopolist. There hasn't been one civilization living beyond subsistent levels without using capital.

In the United Arab Emirates, capitalism or socialism? How do you think?

Socialism, communism, fascism,Trumpism and every state-backed economy including the UAE are all just different flavors of collectivist statism; not free market capitalism.

Damn it, you're right 100% !!! But they have such a cool distribution system which is very necessary for capitalist countries))) It would be great to take only positive qualities and connect.

Yeap. Laissez-faire capitalism vs Corporatism.
massive difference.

Then all who can not work will starve (orphans, invalids, mature people ...)

Only if we let them. The beauty of free market is that we get to help people however we want. This is a common fallacy that people have a hard time with. "If we don't have a state, the poor will starve" Well that is a very bleak way of looking at humanity. Even with all the burdens that government has put on us I can confidently say that I have seen a lot more people being helped by other people/churches/charities than I have seen helped by the government and I would bet that you would say the same.

Only time will tell

This is where we see the danger of letting ideologues take control of our educational system -- words cease to have common meanings, and much disagreement comes from simply having different definitions for things.

Capitalism simply means economic freedom. But our society has allowed it to be redefined as "Greed." Thus when people say Capitalism is evil, what they really mean is Greed is evil. Which no one would disagree with.

If you redefine Capitalism as freedom, a few people would argue that economic freedom is bad, but those are the same group of Progressives who believe that human nature is bad, and that left to their own devices, society will implode because absent the external control of government, humans will tear their own society apart.

Once you realize this, that Progressivism springs from a very dark place, a place of ultimate disillusion and disappointment in what humanity creates when they are allowed to voluntarily cooperate versus being told what to do by some authority, then the whole Progressive platform starts to make sense.

Interesting that those who supposedly are the "idealistic" political force are actually coming from a perspective of deep distrust of humanity, while those who are supposedly the "callous, uncaring" political force (Conservatives) are coming from a perspective of faith and trust in human nature.

As always, the world is actually the opposite from what it appears to be on the surface.

And what to do with the extremely fast-growing corporate and government debt? The entire modern economic system is built on the lending rate. Corporate and government debt is a ticking time bomb. So the capitalism of today is an illusion. A cryptocurrency and blockchain technology are creating a new economy. What is the name of the incoming formation is still unknown. This is my personal opinion.

You got one thing right! "the capitalism of today is an illusion" It sure is because it really isn't capitalism. It is neo-fascism. Fascism is when the government controls the companies and they work together to enrich themselves often using socialism. Think Nazi Germans, Mussolini's Italy, etc. Today we have "neo-fascism" where the corporations control the government through lobbying and writing the laws (the congress people don't write them anymore) and they both work together to enrich themselves. It's a big mess that is unsustainable in the long run...

we still embrace a mixed economic system of vital objects that rely on the lives of the people in the effort by the state. indeed all have a positive impact and megatifnya.thanks for sharing@kyriacos

Yeap. our system can be characterised as mixed in theory but in practise is pure capitalistic.

Wise words. It really is impossible to add the same value to everything, because it becomes no longer valuable. Nothing we can do about the way nature works..

capitalism WORKS...every single time it is tried.
Socialism..doesn't.

precisely man. precisely.
nature is the best scientist

In my opinion most powerful countries are taking great interest

what does that has to do with anything?

capitalism system supports many states now but still we are facing probles

I think that is not only competition what drive our world. Cooperation and balance between things and creatures count too.
Because to be focused to much in racing after profits we forget to maintain balance in the world. The consequence are climate changes for instance.

You should study Milton Friedman ... he was a brilliant economist college professor in the 1980's that Reaganomics based itself on. Unfortunately the Republicans took some very brilliant understanding and used it to dismantle the system for private gain and personal agendas. I think the bottom line is about level playing fields, but in the right context. Equality doesn't mean sameness. Anyway, he has a lot of talks on youtube that are super worth watching.
