Haircuts in Cambodia...... What will I do?

in #cambodia6 years ago (edited)

Situated in Khmer Pub Street a road of hairdressing and beautician stalls sit side by side.

In Cambodia, same niche businesses like to trade side by side instead of standing out solo in the crowd. Handy when you are an expat in a foreign country looking for a specific service, but I am not sure how effective that makes for building and growing your business as a trader.

We had found the best colourist and team of stylists. But sadly, he has now moved to Vietnam and now after I have let the girls grow their hair out after these cute cuts they are beginning to look a little shabby. So we are now on a search for our new favourite stylist in Siem Reap.

Our our regular salon, the girls have the girls have their hair washed, cut, a head massage and finished in matching bob haircuts. They felt fresh and looked just beautiful. When they were finished we paid 8000 Reil ($2).

They thanked the stylist with an "akon", meaning thank you in Khmer and were now ready to hit the markets to complete their shopping looking adorable.

Services are very "cheap" compared to the same services as back home in Australia. Many hairdressers in Cambodia have learnt their trade through hands-on experience in a salons family-owned business. Amazingly I have learnt that some dental practitioners trade with no qualifications and learnt everything they know through their family-run business. But I shall leave that topic for another time.

Here is a general guide to price lists for hairdressing services in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Although, there are many western trained or qualified western stylists here who charge varying rates.

The prices listed are based on the average services in a local Khmer salon:
Wash, blow-dry and straighten/style, long hair - $2
Wash, style cut, blow-dry and straighten/style, long hair -$5
Full head colour, wash, cut, blow-dry, style/straighten long hair-$10
Head highlights, colour, wash, cut, blow-dry, style/straighten long hair-$10
Wash, blow dry, men/boys cut-$2
Wash, blow-dry, cut men, cut, ear clean, shave- $5
Wash, blow-dry up-style hairstyle and formal make-up - $7
Hair extensions - $30 per ponytail virgin hair including appying them.
Formal make-up - $5
Tempory nails-$5
Gel nails-$7
Manicure-$3
Pedicure-$3

We have had our share of positive and negative experiences at different local places.

Ultimately like everything it is up to you to look at the quality of work of the person you want to use before letting anyone scissors in hand near you locks. Unless you're a thrill seeker like myself, who looks at bad haircuts like good stories and do not mind having a whacky haircut around town for a few weeks when mishaps or language barriers strike in a quest to find that perfect stylist like we have now lost.

I think no matter where you live you always face potentially getting that horrible hair cut on our quest to find a perfect hairstylist. We have all had one and I would love to hear all about yours.

Share your most horrid hairdresser or haircut experiences with me below. I would love to compare tales.

Will we ever find the same type of service like we received anywhere else? Or should I begin youtube lessons on home haircuts because that's always successful right? Only time will tell I guess.

My hair is curly and I grow it as long as I can stand it before getting it cut. No one ever does a good job with curly hair and it's sad! I have lived in Panama for a year and haven't had a cut yet! I don't trust people to do it. Your girls look so cute! What great rates. Good when they can learn a trade like hair cutting through the family business...not so good when it is dentistry!! YIKES!!

Yup @apanamamama, I agree with you about dentistry! Its a BIG NO!

Now that I have lost these guys I am not quite sure how cute we will be looking. We have all had a few shockers here lol. I have joined you @apanamamama and let it grow out as long as I can! Thanks for your kind words on the girls.
Remember my friend that is moving over. His name is Tyler and he will be heading to Panama City. I forgot to reply on the other post. He will be doing a small amount of travel before and should be there in around 4 weeks. If you bump into the self-proclaimed "Big chunky fellow" give him a huge squeeze for me. He will be dearly missed in the Siem Reap community, Panama has just got really lucky.

Those bob cuts look so cute on your girls! I have always loved that look. Wow those prices are so reasonable. It seems that a lot of people learn their profession from hands on experience nowadays. It is hard finding a good stylists, I am thankful my MIL is my stylist because I don’t trust everyone with my hair.

Thanks @crosheille! I think they are pretty cute too. In Australia, we would pay around $15 for a boys haircut. I have 5 kids, if I was still living there I would have to consider taking up the trade so I wasn't sent broke lol.

It's always hard to find a good stylist in Cambodia. I will keep trying until I find someone as awesome as these guys were. Plus, I have learnt for my previous experiments on my children's heads and found out that I was never a hairdresser in a previous life and I shouldn't give up teaching Pre-K lol.

Lol that’s so funny! I’ll have 5 kids soon too and I would do the same things...learn the trade to save money. Don’t worry you’re not the only one. I struggle doing my daughter’s hair at times. All we can do is the best we can ;)

Good to know that at Cambodia their hairdresser got their experiences from their family members maybe it is a much easier way to learn from, and no need to pay extras unlike going to vocational school and earn a certificate that has fees. For me, I will go to a proper saloon if for my own haircut. But for kids, I think it still ok and the price not bad too! Ooh! By the way, nice bob haircut on your girls. They look so lovely.

Thanks @esdee, I think the girls look pretty cute too! We homeschool our children and understand that people can learn new things and gain knowledge outside of a classroom.
