Cambodia ranked #4 top destinations for expats

Cambodia was ranked 4th on the Internations’ 2018 Expat Insider survey.
Ranking was based on how countries had been voted on by their expat residents, looking at more than 40 individual factors that influence an expats experiences living in a foreign country.

Why move to Cambodia?

Initially, our large family had never planned to live abroad. When life was seeming to continue to “kick us in the guts”, we decided to pack up our family of 7 and have the experience of a lifetime and travel Asia for around a year. Plans changed....We soon found and fell in love with the sleepy town of Siem Reap, Cambodia and have now been calling this beautiful city home for the past 6 years.

The town is filled with beautiful locals, expats and expat families from all different walks of life. I enjoy hearing stories of how other people like us, had chosen to stay and call Cambodia home. So share your life abroad stories with me, I'd love to hear all about them.

Here are just a few of many reasons why expats choose to call Cambodia, their home.

Visas

The visa process is very easy. For around $280 you receive a one-year multiple entry visa. With 365 days in a year, that works out to be less than a dollar a day! AWESOME!! Some organizations and business included visa in working contracts. Be sure to inquire if this applies to you.

Cost of living

The cost of living in this rapidly growing city is very low. Many people report being able to live more lavish lifestyles then previously before in their home countries many expats hire home help of cleaners, nannies, coooks and carers to assist with their daily life.

To rent a 3 bedroom apartment with security and pool around $350pm is standard all real estate rental contract prices can be negotiated.

Eating out prices ranging from $1 street food to $15 fancy dining. 50c beers and $2.50 cocktails and $1 fruit shakes, it’s not surprising many expats choose to enjoy eating out most times.

People

Khmer people are the most welcoming, kindest and selfless people. For a nation that has very little, they are always smiling and always so friendly. Do not be surprised if you enter a restaurant and your children are whisked up and paraded around the with the staff. Cambodians love children and always make families feel most welcomed.

Life is “simpler”

You may still hear the odd expat whine or complain. Most expats agree life in Cambodia is far easier than their home countries. There are definitely fewer rules and regulations and it is also not difficult to set up a business as a foreigner.

Weather

The weather is always beautiful and sunny. With the rainy season bring morning and afternoon showers to help cool down.

I will go into all these in further detail in following posts, so make sure you stay tuned.

Getting around

Getting around Cambodia is easy for the solo traveller or large family like us. You can catch a tuk-tuk, rent a motorbike or car short or long term. Or even hire your own driver and the vehicle for a small agreed monthly amount.

After 6 years in Cambodia, my family of 7 could not imagine living anywhere else in the world. We have experienced so many things that previously we have only been able to read about. Living abroad may not be the perfect life for everyone, but it is the perfect life for us.

It is definitely not always as easy as it all sounds, but I am glad we made a choice to pick up our bags and set off on that big adventure. It certainly changed our lives forever!

In the future, I plan to write more posts about living life as an expat family in Cambodia. Sharing all my knowledge of we have learnt along the way. So make sure to follow to receive future updates.

I have always heard that Cambodia is a great place to visit and it is really near from where I am, Malaysia. Need to convince my husband who isn't into traveling though, haha. I admire your zeal to travel and settle in a different country, @mummy-monza. Some Reap does sounds like it has treated your family of 7 well. Love to see your girl finding her best friend there too :) thanks for sharing how it is like being an expat in Cambodia!

YES @happycrazycon, you should visit!! If you are ever in Siem Reap drop me a line :) would be lovely to meet some STEEMmummas in real life :)
I love that photo of my daughter Scarlet too. I'm so happy my children have been able to build strong friendships here.
