Signing ceremony of the Treaty of Rome

Since the 2008 financial crisis, we are witnessing two powerful phenomena: on one hand, the disaffection, mistrust or even downright rejection of the elites, those who for more than 60 years had been at the helm; and on the other hand a still timid empowerment of the "every man", of the very "peoples" on behalf of which the Heads of State were signing momentous decisions.
This empowerment is brought about by blockchain technology. As explained in past articles such as Blockchain revolution: Money and Credit, blockchain technologies such as bitcoin or ethereum democratize money creation, previously an important lock on power in the hands of the elites. But human societies are not only about trade and money, just as Europe has not been envisioned as a mere trade and currency area.
------
Human societies can only hold together, thrive and prosper if the economic and monetary aspects are complemented and reinforced with social bonds, with caring about your fellows.

This is what I call the "second layer" protocol. Bitcoin has the "Lightning Network", Ethereum has (talk of) the Plasma network, while EOS thinks they are so performant they'll never need a second layer. But they are all missing the point. The true "second layer protocol" is built not with computer networks and software. The best second layer protocol is the one being deployed by the steem blockchain: the social layer!
------
Steem's second layer is woven by interactions in the comments section of each post; by the plethora of Discord chat "servers"; by the communities and their "curation trails"; by the dApps such as @esteem and @steemmonsters. In real life, steem's second layer is consolidated by local and regional meetups. Before the upcoming SteemFest3, I want to reflect on one in particular, the "Steem.Camp 2018" organised late August in Germany by @felixxx and @lrock.

There were already many, many articles about Steem.Camp 2018 written some in English, some in German by the organizers and participants such as @kadna, @rivalzzz, @louis88, @lichtcatchtoby, @schamangerbert, @pollux.one, @jukatravels and @pharesim (and others I hope will pardon me for not mentioning them), but as far as I can tell, no articles in French about it (despite @pollux.one being half-French).Il y a eu des nombreux articles au sujet du Steem.
As far as I could tell, I was the only participant who was not a native-speaker of German, and I think the language (and maybe more generally the culture) barrier played a role in not having more people from nearby France, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium join the gathering. So here's a big shoutout for all European steemians to overcome in the future any reservation they might have and engage across borders. Here is a beautiful and unique platform which allows us to build a different Europe, a "bottom-up" Europe, the Europe of "every (stee)m(i)an" built by the people themselves rather than by politicians on our behalf!

And for those who still doubt, here is a reminder that the "steem love" can teach all the languages! @steemalsace, @louishugo, @sebbbl, @siavach, @elmetro, @lemouth, @evildido, @roxane and @oroger, and all the others, let's use the steem blockchain to bring down whatever keeps us apart on this continent!

Hi Sorin - thank you for this "europe-positive" Post ;-) Being at Steem.Camp2018 i am totally with you: we all did not know us in real life befrore and we had a great time together!!!
The language is very important, my english is not very good and i have not participate in the english "steem(it) diskussions. (What did not matter much)
There was another member not native german speaking (pharesims spanish friend) and she had difficulties to talk with us because she is just learning english... So, the language is important and it is good to learn English (i don't know another language that is so universal - maybe that will change in future?) to have more fun. It is so amazing that your daughters can speak many languages right now! That opens many doors - not only in Europe.
Greetings Kadna

Indeed, language matters and English offers common ground for us. So no excuse not to come together more often ! :)

Yessss, that's it! ;-)

Great shoutout and great review of the steem.camp.
It was really a pleasure meeting all people there and of course you are right about me, not writing (much) in French. Mon francais est bien rouillé...
Greetings
pollux.one

Great article as always @sorin.cristescu! This article made my day! Thanks for bringing us all back to what's really important.

@ajanphoto

With others, we are already trying to use Steem for building a novel way for science outreach. We are actively looking for help from investors, but so far this fails drastically. I unfortunately won't be able to go to Steemfest (as lecturing in Spain at the same moment). However, feel free to reach me out on discord if you want to discuss this further.

I can put you in contact with people from research universities in France. Will reach out on Discord

Cool! Thanks a lot!

A very simple idea for @steemitboard (and its creator @arcange) is to create "points" like the Partiko points (you already have a database so extending to it shouldn't be that hard). For each badge you allocate some steemitboard-points.

People should be able to "redeem" those "steemitboard points" for an upvote from @steemitboard (just like @partiko) - you have a VP worth $1.75 that is unused (100% full) as of this moment so it shouldn't be a brake.

The "gamification" being that you allocate proportionally more points as someone "saves" points - say 50 points for someone with 0 but 67 points (for the same achievement) for someone who already has 50.

Which makes one want to think twice whether to "redeem now" for an upvote or to wait for even more "steemitboard points" (delayed gratification)

What do you think ?
