STEEM bots in 2020
On Steemit there are several bots, there was originally a bot that would greet all new users, but I am not sure if it is still around. But it had a large amount of SP when I had last seen it.
There are several STEEM bots that have kind of random purposes and can be summoned by mentioning their names. Anyone can create these, and there are others you might never encounter. Steemit is full of bots. Groups on Facebook associated with Steemit should teach people how to make STEEM bots and accept STEEM bots in their group.

On most of the internet there is an issue with bots, for example the Russian Troll bots, or bots that go on Forums and spam viagra ads. But on the Blockchain there is a strong need for bots. Just as a simple example there are trade bots, that sit on the market and buy and sell micro price changes to earn you money. This is similar to Stock Exchange bots where you pay for your account to mimick an established trader and you can scale it down to pennies on their dollars, but the bot buys and sells when the person it is following does.
On the Blockchain what bots do is earn you money without you having to do anything, and once this is understood it won't be an issue for people to begin to be replaced by Robots in the work place. Blockchain bots are like having Robots that earn you money. There was one company called Bazillion Beings that was started by Wolfram (a famous mathematician), people from Bungie (Halo), Uber and Twitter I think, all from Armenia come together to do this. The project never launched but they were making a system where you select bot features, and it learns from you and asks you questions and you could give it new features. Then others could copy your bot if you shared it on Facebook or Twitter or whatever, and the new ones would learn and be added to and not even be recognizable at some point and would be shared and copied and shared and copied always evolving.
And these bots would have been on a blockchain earning a cryptocurrency that would pay you and the creators of Bazillion Beings for hosting and development. They would make blogs, find pictures, music, local places, people, or anything. That is how Blockchain bots can function off the blockchain.
The best example of Blockchain bots being used on the Blockchain is STEEM bots, which are not extremely developed yet, but do exist in a large ecosystem of other STEEM bots.
RESTEEMING BOTS
The first example of STEEM bots is Resteem bots, which basically do the STEEM version of Sharing or Retweeting your post. This is good if you have content that is extremely consumable, maybe with an interesting picture and title, because all a resteem does is put some eyeballs on a post. If you have posts that people are looking for, or don't know they are looking for but will when they see it, then you can use these bots effectively. On Facebook they actually have a similar function built in, where you can pay (way more than on Steemit) and get views and interaction with your post.
If you use Resteem Bots correctly, as part of a overall larger plan, maybe with human resteems, social media, bringing friends and family members in to work with you, making a group on Facebook or Minds, etc, etc, etc. Then you can use Resteem bots effectively, but each bot is 1 user, so the more other things you have going on and the more bots you use the better off you are.

"@anupbose - To use @anupbose send 0.1SBD to their wallet with your link as the memo to be resteemed to their account and on @apukb, both with over 1,000 followers. The bonus with using this service is that both of these accounts also upvote your post :)
@resteemable - This is a free (donations appreciated) resteem service. This account has around 2,700 followers. To get your free resteem all you need to do is erase the http:// from your post and then type ‘re’ infront of the url."

UPVOTING BOTS
The other main version of Steembots are Upvote bots. Resteem bots are not inherently profitable to the person spending STEEM to get a Resteem, while they can drive engagement on posts that people want to engage with, if they are following the bot or following someone the bot reaches, who then resteems or upvotes. And the bot owner earns money as the bot is paid, and when a post they Resteem early becomes popular. So if everyone wants to support people, follow the Resteem bots and Resteem their Resteems. Resteem bots are also a good way to earn money yourself. There have been tons of posts and development on the formula of when a bot should vote for a post (after X amount of votes or earnings) and your bot can use these formulas to almost predict popular posts and earn you STEEM.
But an Upvote bot is inherently profitable for everyone. When Steemit started these bots had no SP, but some have developed a good amount of SP and continue to do so. So you send STEEM to the bot increasing their voting power, then they Upvote your post, giving you money. And some bots pay you a % of the curation reward. And the cycle continues with the bot. You can also make these bots, but need SP loaded on them for them to have any real purpose for a customer.

The easiest way to understand bots more complex than this is to start with MYCIN which was a system used by doctors to identify Meningitis, by going through a prompt that asked them questions about what they were seeing and the patient's experience, and would give a result as to if that is what it was.
This then became a whole ecosystem of AI that was not in fact AI as it did not learn, but instead used a database to get to a resolution. These are called Expert Systems, and are the equivelant of a basic modern chatbot, with a higher degree of specialization and information. An Expert System basically guides a professional through their procedures, and ensures they know everything they need to know about what they are doing. This is basically the route to look down to create more functional STEEM bots, and is all based on IF this THEN that, which are called "If Then Statements" and are the basics of coding and programming.
