The year of 2017 has become a truly breakthrough for the industry of cryptocurrencies. The rapid growth of Bitcoin’s price has attracted the attention of all media. The digital money from the "incomprehensible hobby for geeks" has turned into one of the most discussed topics in the world.
But, of course, there are people behind every new development or technology: someone creates, someone popularizes, and someone uses various novelties for the benefit of society or personal needs. In this article let’s look around the past year and remember people, who made a significant contribution to the development of the crypto industry.
The year of 2017 proved to be very successful for the CEO of the leading American exchange of digital assets Coinbase, Brian Armstrong. Sometimes the policy of the platform caused mixed reactions from the community, but this didn’t prevent Coinbase from becoming one of the most famous and recognizable companies in the blockbuster industry.
In addition, this year Coinbase officially confirmed the status of the largest platform in the Bitcoin industry, becoming the first service in the cryptocurrency ecosystem with investments over one billion dollars.
The founder of the Ethereum (the second largest coin in capitalization rating) Vitalik Buterin hardly needs a presentation. The success and popularity of Ethereum speak for himself. This year was also noted by a large-scale conference of "etherium" developers Devcon3, during which Buterin told about the future of the project and presented a "road map" for the next future years.
This year Vitalik Buterin entered the Top 100 most influential Russians of the century (in Forbes rating). In addition, in the previous summer Buterin discussed the possibilities of the detachment during a meeting with the president of the Russian Federation, and a little later the network blew up the rumors about the death of the founder of Ethereum. In general, he is a real rock star in the world of cryptocurrency.
This year, the creator of Litecoin Charlie Lee won universal respect and sympathy for honest, sometimes ironic statements and deeds. For example, he left his post of technical director of Coinbase to concentrate all his efforts on developing his own project.
He also sold all the coins that belonged to him, because he doesn’t want to be accused of somehow influencing the price of his offspring. The creator of Litecoin also called Satoshi Nakamoto to do the same, which is very ironic, because, as one of the network "conspiracy theories" says, Charlie Lee and the creator of the first cryptocurrency can be the same person.
Billionaires Tyler and Cameron Winklewosy have long been active in the field of cryptocurrency. This year they set a new record - the twins became the first businessmen in the world, whose capital in Bitcoins exceeded $1 billion. Another owner of more than $1 billion in Bitcoins is the founder of the cryptocurrency, the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto.
Of course, such an unprecedented capital requires appropriate security measures, but even here the brothers were ahead of the whole planet. After several hacker attacks Winklewosy printed out cryptographic keys that provided access to Bitcoins, cut them into several parts, placed each of the fragments in a separate envelope, and sent them to bank cells across all the states of America.
Their only big failure in 2017 is the unsuccessful launch of Bitcoin-ETF, but the twins, apparently, don’t intend to surrender.
Andreas Antonopoulos is often called one of the main preachers of cryptophilosophy, because with his books and lectures he made a huge contribution to the development of digital financial systems.
Most of all, Antonopoulos is known as the author of the best-selling books “Mastering Bitcoin” and “The Internet of Money”, as well as his vivid presentations at various conferences and events in which he mercilessly denounces the hypocrisy of a corrupt financial system and tells about the advantages of Bitcoin.
Antonopoulos is respected by many crypto-enthusiasts, which they visually demonstrated in December: then the Bitcoin community thanked the well-known cryptopropologist for his contribution to the popularization of the digital currency, having collected more than $700,000 in Bitcoins for him.
It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of Adam Beck to the development of the industry of cryptocurrencies and blockchain. In part, he is even involved in the creation of Bitcoin itself, because almost 10 years ago, in the announcement of his “White Paper” Satoshi Nakamoto noted that new coins will be generated using the algorithm Proof-of-Work, which was previously described by Back.
Working closely with the Bitcoin Core development team, Adam Back is also the CEO of Blockstream. Among other things, the company's development is aimed at solving one of the main problems of Bitcoin - scaling. The latest project by Blockstream Satellite is an ambitious attempt to "deliver" Bitcoin to anywhere in the world with the help of leased space satellites.
In recent years Adam Back rarely appeared on the pages and screens of the mass media, but it was in 2017 that he became one of the main speakers in the cryptocurrency area, promoting technologies, ideas and philosophy of Bitcoin.

And, of course, McAfee recently attracted everyone's attention when he cheered up crypto-enthusiasts, promising to "eat his penis" if in three years the price of bitcoin doesn’t reach $1 million.
