According to experts from Trend Micro, a virus called Digmine affects desktop versions of the application when users work in the Google Chrome browser. If the Facebook user account is configured to automatically log in, Digmine easily gets into his computer. In addition, it sends a link to the file containing the malicious software to the friends of the account owner.

Cryptomining malware works by using the power of the computer to generate coins and confirm transactions by intruders.

Mining Bitcoin requires a lot of energy, so criminal communities began to distribute malware to use other people's computers for their own enrichment.

Experts believe that the virus first appeared in South Korea, then spread to Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, the Philippines, Thailand and Venezuela. They said that they expect its further distribution around the world.

Facebook representatives stated:

"We maintain a number of automated systems to help stop harmful links and files from appearing on Facebook and in Messenger. If we suspect your computer is infected with malware, we will provide you with a free anti-virus scan from our trusted partners. We share tips on how to stay secure and links to these scanners on facebook.com/help."

Experts recommend not clicking on links received from unknown persons. Some of these links often include the following phrases: "thisaworkstation.space", "mybigthink.space" and "thisdayfunnyday.space".
