Beer Review - #11 - Lorry Boy's Jim & Joe's Golden Ale

Brewed by:

MacArthur Grange Brewery

Alcohol Content:

4.5%

Beer Type:

Golden Ale

History:

This large supermarket made and owned brand is produced by the Macarthur Grange Brewery, which by coincidence, have just setup a new large manufacturing plant in an old Coles distribution warehouse in Goulburn, NSW. This beer is produced by Macarthur Grange Brewery on Liquorlands behalf in an effort to enter into the craft beer range themselves. According to the label, Jim and Joe used to make “small batch” beer and deliver it around the traps via an old lorry. Unless Jim and Joe work for Liquorland, I'm not sure whether that story would stand up to the 'pub' test.

Drinkers Review:

This is a Coles/Liquorland brand bottle. It has a faint honey smell and clear golden colour. It has a light sweetness and bitterness and a strong taste on the palate. It is a much better beer than most at this entry-level price. If you are looking for a reasonable beer to down in front of the fire on a cold winters night, then give this one a try. Although a mass-produced product, it is a reasonable brew.

Doesn't this get into a interesting space - it's a good enough beer as you say, but it's a cynical marketing exercise by coles/liquorland, which attempts to cash in on an industry that is everything they are not, genuine, independent, usually part of the community. So would I drink it? Probably not

Yes. I agree with you sentiments. However, I was drawn into the marketing ploy and it wasn't until I did some research later that all was not what it appeared to be. Thanks for reading.

Which is what they are banking on, no one can possibly keep up with the number of new breweries and they mimic them so well - having said all that if it okay beer then you haven't exactly lost out or anything

Well there you go, I had no idea who owned it. You learn something new every day on this site. As for the brew itself, I didn't mind it. Not the worst one I've had in a while.

Nice story, enjoy the beers

I´ve never heard of this brew so far, but 2 out of 5 Scooter-Stars... Kind of disappointing, so it will probably not get into my cart :)
