What's happening?

Life is a learning experience, a series of transformations based on what we discover and what we experience. Some are tiny -- and seem hardly worth registering ... and some are pretty significant. The aspects from the planets -- the parade of moods and events we meet in everyday life -- set the tone and tell the story.

Each time a sky planet forms a meaningful angle with a natal planet in your horoscope, something happens. You change; life changes -- and sometimes it's the other way around. The basic themes, however, are progress ... and education ... and growth -- from who you were when you arrived into someone better, wiser, more capable, more complex. In retrospect you can see the changes ... and the flow of the spiritual drama.

Sun / Pluto aspects

Aspects that involve the Sun -- your self-awareness, ego, and life-force -- and Pluto -- profound change, fundamental transformation, death-and-rebirth -- are heavier than some of the others.

The transiting Sun touches transiting Pluto once a year as it makes its trip through the Zodiac. Usually it doesn't set off anything earth-shaking, but there is a psychological shift that happens (and is happening now.)

Something happens

As the Sun and Pluto align, a metamorphosis unfolds. The change can take minutes or days or weeks ... depending on what all is going on (and what needs to happen.) Somewhere in this period, you will let go of things that are no longer useful, or appropriate, or profitable or positive.

This can affect relationships, employment situations, long-standing commitments, financial investments, ideas and opinions that used to define you ... pretty much anything that has served its purpose and is ready to pass on.

Things change

There may be quite a sense of release as you let go of what has become essentially "excess baggage." And in some cases, there can be a sense of loss or grieving -- because your attachments to whatever is leaving isn't quite ready to be totally severed.

And yet, that's the requirement -- to divest yourself of "what isn't working, what isn't viable, what isn't you any longer" ... and emerge -- in a very real sense ... reborn -- as someone new ... and different.

You are not who you were

The experience can be subtle -- an automatic shrugging off of what you are casting aside ... and life goes on. It can also be shattering -- when the intersection between the "old you" and the "new you" is so ragged (and maybe traumatic) that you're actually unstable for a while -- because you're no longer who you were ... but you're also not practiced enough to comfortably occupy the new persona you have become.

Most Sun / Pluto contacts fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes ... and most of those are toward the calmer, easier end of the spectrum. (Thank goodness!!) But be aware of the purge that is happening -- in your situation, in your outlook and in you.

You are stepping up to another turn of the wheel. And who you are now is not who you were -- although it may take a little time and adjustment to really settle into your new "space."

• A strong feeling of change and transition
• A broader, more mature, more experienced outlook
• Possibly a sense of "having survived" some kind of test or ordeal
• A new sense of power, direction, conviction and self-assertion
• A greater feeling of self-respect and self-awareness

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.
