Porcupine Drawing

Once in awhile I like to draw some animals so figured I would share one that isn't as popular as a cat :) I mean sure its not as cuddly but that doesn't mean they cant be cute!

Wanted to draw a porcupine because of the quills and try to figure out a technique to render them in black and white. Was a challenge to try and give it depth while still capturing the quill pattern and craziness. May have to do another one just to figure out if I should simplify it more or keep the detail. I find sometimes it takes me awhile to figure out if I like a drawing I did but I was pretty satisfied with this one.

Very nice, @steemitadventure! About how long did this take you? I lose patience in my own art attempts with repetitive details like those quills. I would have given up after the 100th quill! Something I need to work on, for sure.

I am going to keep better track on time for this type of work. I think it was probably around 8 hours or so, that's including versions I tossed out because I didn't like how the quills were looking.

I understand the feeling of loosing patience on some works. That's why some things I decide are just sketches and then pick and choose things I really want to finish when its working for "fun". If its for a client then that's where I really keep the focus and don't give myself any slack.

Thanks for sharing. Makes me feel a bit better, because I spend so long on trying to draw things like pine cones, or a lupine inflorescence, and it makes me crazy. I watched a video on techniques for making botanical drawings less crazy-making by simplifying many-leaved or -flowered plants...perhaps I need to revisit that instruction. Or, I just need to tackle simple things for a while...

This is great! Would make an epic tattoo I think too.

Ha! thanks for checking it out. Imagine a tattoo of one would hurt less than picking one up :)

That's.... hard to say. For me, I hate any sort of sliver, so that might make the porcupine better. But the feeling of razor blades against the skin when getting a tattoo... Tattoo is more worth it, but the porcupine would probably still hurt less :P

Animals in general are a challenge for me XD I only know how to draw dogs and cats. Indeed awesome work I love the texture and the shadows, it looks awesome even thou it's in black and white. ( I think with more colors will be a little harder)

Yea I was pondering color, if I did I think I would sorta of use a digital watercolor effect. Not sure what I would do in pure "painted" effort but may have to do that one day. I am always sort of drawn (pun intended) to black and white line work because of enjoying comic book art at an early age.

Thanks for checking it out and Yunk on!

YUNKING :) yeah, I think the water color will suit it, thou all depends, I still cant get used to digital water color. What program do you use?
I love comics and manga, your art is great, no matter if it is black and white or colored I saw your other post and I loved it.

I mostly use Corel Painter because of the brush selection and how it interacts on a Cintiq tablet. The digital watercolor in Painter is pretty cool they have a few different versions. I am using 2017 currently even though they just released 2018. I haven't looked into what changes they have made yet but I usually end up getting it most years.

excellent drawing of the porcupine - keep up your hard work, You have talent

Thank you for the compliment and for taking the time to check it out this weekend!
