Walking around the zoos - Zoo of Rivne - Ukraine - Porcupines - Hystrix

in #animalphotography6 years ago

Greetings, dear friends! I invite you to join my walk through the zoological park of the city of Rivne, Ukraine.

I want to share with you my impressions of meeting this wonderful zoo and its inhabitants. There are a lot of impressions. Every year we try to get into this zoo.

People often have sympathy and vice versa, dislikes for some species of animals. Perhaps, after this journey, you will change your opinion about certain types of creatures from the animal kingdom.

I will not give bare encyclopedic data. All this you can read on the Internet. Those feelings that I experienced when meeting with animals, associations, that's what makes me go further. This is something that cannot be read, this is something that needs to be experienced, felt by each cell of the spinal cord.

If you were absent at the beginning of the journey, join in!

Our journey began five days ago, today, the sixth day. On the links that I gave below, you can get acquainted with such inhabitants of the zoo as pelicans, meerkats and the black-and-white rough lemur, African tortoise, horses and ponies.

Today I want to introduce you to Porcupines or Hystrix.

As I said yesterday, it was very difficult for me to persuade the children to go on. they were so enthusiastic about communicating with horses that they forgot about everything.

When all the grass was torn out and the horses were fed, we went on. The next aviary, or rather to say the fence, belonged to the Porcupines.

For the second year I tried to photograph him from a close distance, but, he, he either slept in the shade, or, he kept at a great distance from the edge of the barrier.

We arrived at the moment when food was brought for Porcupine. It was a lot of all kinds of fruits. He was very busy eating, but it gave me the opportunity to take some pictures.

In our region Porcupines are not found. In the old days they lived on our continent in the Altai region, but, no longer. This is exotic for our locality. The most prickly animals in our forests are Hedgehogs. but, the Hedgehog, is a predator, it eats snakes, mice and frogs, and Porcupine is a rodent. It is very similar to beaver, or large guinea pig. His diet is vegetables and fruits. He digs huge holes, in a word, this is a big mouse with needles on his back.

Hedgehog I photographed in the wild. It turned out such a macro. You can compare these two prickly friends.

As I already said. in past years I could not take a picture of the Porcupine when he was awake. Usually, we came to the zoo when there was a clear sun, but this is bad, the heat causes the animals to hide in the shade, or just to sleep. It is better to come to the zoo when the air temperature is not very high.

Twenty years ago I came to the fishing shop and was very surprised. As floats, the seller offered me to buy Porcupine needles. Such floats, as I later learned, were very much in demand. I bought it, but I can tell you that my favorite float will forever be a simple quill pen. Leave Porcupine needles. Geese have more feathers.

Porcupine ate quickly and with great appetite. As soon as the bowl was empty, he went into the shade, to sleep.

We said goodbye and went on.

We saw the Porcupines, we are going to move on, many more interesting things await us. To be continued.

The zoo is located at the exit from the city of Rivne towards Kiev. The street is called Kiev.

Tickets at affordable prices, a children's ticket costs a little more than one US dollar, for adults, tickets cost about two dollars.
